This is more of a rant than anything but has this been your experience in getting professional advice or opinions in treatment?

Dermatologist: writes a script for propecia but says just keep taking same dose because it works indefinitely and there's nothing else you can do, won't talk about Avodart or any other options if you think 1mg propecia is no longer working, still probably best advice i could get

Hair transplant doctor: (won't give time of day if you have no interest right now in a hair transplant)

Tricologist: suggests crap like laser combs

General practitioner / family physican: doesn't even know what really causes male pattern baldness

My experience.

GP in Ireland. He wouldn't prescribe finasteride because he said he honestly didn't know enough about it. I explained about it and that it's FDA approved. He said he'd do some reading and maybe next time I saw him he would prescribe it. When I returned again for another issue, I asked again, he still hadn't done any research and wouldn't prescribe it.

Hair Transplant surgeon in Ireland (HRBR). Prescribed me finasteride, wouldn't prescribe me dutasteride when I asked two years later, said it wasb't FDA approved, and though as far as he was aware it was well tolerated, he wasn't going to risk it.

GP in Japan. Asked for dutasteride, he gave me dutasteride, no questions.

In general, almost all GPs and dermatologists are worthless if you want to treat hair loss. Maybe you'll get lucky, but you're better off finding a hair transplant surgeon, they actually know their **** and will give you what you need.

hair transplant doctors are okay. After that, doctors don't know their ****, but may listen to you and actually be willing to be educated if you're lucky. Most won't listen, won't try, won't do their research and won't help. Sucks, but they don't care about hair loss. Well not male pattern baldness at least.

It's best to go to a hair transplant surgeon to talk to them about hair loss, they're the ones who know about the subject since they basically specialize in it. Dermatologists are another option, though it's less likely they'll be the better one to talk about hair loss with. From what I've observed, it seems like many on here have a hard time getting a prescription for Finasteride to treat their male pattern baldness despite that the medication has the approval for that purpose.

Here's my experience: For those who don't know, I take Dutasteride, and haven't had any problem with it. Originally I obtained the prescription for it from my GP after I talked to him about my Male Pattern Baldness, and that it was very debilitating to live with constant inflammation, pain, and excessive oiliness/sebum on my scalp along that I didn't like the hair loss effecting my appearance. I talked to him about taking Dutasteride, and that I would prefer it over Finasteride since it's a little better. I told him that I'd fine if they prefer to prescribe me Finasteride, but that I'd rather go for Dutasteride if that was alright. My GP is a very caring one, and actually knows about genetic baldness, despite being a Norwood 1 himself. Then he talked to me being aware of Propecia, which is the 1 milligram FDA approved dosage of Finasteride for Male Pattern Baldness. He also told me about Proscar, which is the 5 mg dosage of the same medication, but for an enlarged prostate, and that I could cut them into fourths and take a quarter of a tablet daily. Then came to Dutasteride, he seemed a bit hesitant about prescribing it me, though is aware I've done my research before I came and asked him about it for the off-label treatment for hair loss, since it's currently only approved for an enlarged prostate. He then told me to remember that I'm a young healthy man, and that Dutasteride is for older men with prostate issues. He then left the room I was seeing him in, and after about five minutes of just sitting by myself, one of his assistants came into the room I was in, handing me the prescription for genuine Avodart (branded Dutasteride) so I could starting treating my Male Pattern Baldness adequately.
