Going from oral to topical finasteride?

finasteride topically is systematically absorbed. How much is the real question.

There is no difference from oral and topical. They both work there way into your blood stream So if you want to get of finasteride due to the worry of long term use there is nothing to gain by going topical only as it will still work is way in the your system.

Even more so if your making your topical home made you also have he possibility to be absorbing more then you currently take orally.

Dr Lee's formula he sales has 1mg of finasteride in each 1ml of solution

Based of limited clinical reports Ive ready on the application of topical finasteride 30-40% is absorbed when 1mg is solidified in 1ml of a carrier agent like Alcohol.

Thus a twice day application of 1ml would yield between .6-.8mg of finasteride.

Now when you go to make your own formula its not as easy as crushing up pills as those bills are mostly bonding agents/fillers and not the actual active ingredient. The bonding agents or fillers could have an adverse effect when applied topically.

Where did you get that from?

I'll have to dig it back up. Its in my notes. I work with clinical trials for a living so I notate all the time. I'll try to go back through all the info I have over the weekend and link the study.

I have a feeling that you meant a 0.1% topical finasteride solution was shown to lower serum DHT levels by 40% if applied twice daily.

Either way a 38 % reduction of DHT is a lot less than 70 %. And it seems some people, including Dr. Lee, believe that a topical application of finasteride would has the added advatage of working locally as well.
Therefore applying it topically and reaching a 38 % reduction of serum DHT would be more effective than lowering equal amounts of serum DHT orally.

For some strange reason which I simply can't understand, Dr. Lee fails to point out in the advertising blurb on his site that in that study with topical finasteride that caused up to a 39% reduction in serum DHT, haircounts actually went DOWN very slightly. That was probably just an unlucky artifact in the measurement process that wasn't very statistically significant, but still...why did he leave that out of his product description? :)

I wouldn't recommend topical finasteride if you get sides from the oral.

I've read 5 studies regarding this topic. Let me give you a short summary:

1. 0.005% finasteride solution (2x2ml daily) had no effect on hair regrowth and lowered serum DHT.
2. 0.005% finasteride solution (2x1ml daily) had similar success to that of the oral pill. No relevant change in plasma levels of T and DHT.
3. 1% finasteride gel was equivalent to 1mg finasteride at hair regrowth. Fairly limited study, no serum DHT measurements to evaluate systemic absorption.
4. 0.25% finasteride cream was successful at improving hirsutism on women after 6 months (treatment side beated control side).
5. 0.5% finasteride cream had no effect on hirsutism on women (I don't recall more details of this one)

My personal experience after trying a homemade 0,005% solution and a homemade 0,1% cream is that it gets into the bloodstream even at low doses.

Hope this helps.
