After much hassling my doctors I finally convinced one of them at my local surgery (admitedly he has a rep as being a bit "prescription-happy") to prescribe me 5mg finasteride instead of the Propecia which I've just been to Boots to collect.

BUT.... I expected to be given Proscar, instead I was given this generic "Finasteride 5mg" in a simple little blue box. I never even knew such a thing existed other then on these dodgy internet sites. I'm a bit worried now, surely a household name like Boots couldn't be selling fake crap?? It says on the label it's designed for BPH and the tablets are small, odd, triangular shaped white things. The Marketing Authorisation Holder is MPX International Ltd of London and it says they're made in Hungary. All seems a bit shifty to me, has anyone else been given these or heard of them?

On the plus side, 28 of these tablets cost me 20 quid as opposed to the £43 a month I was paying for Propecia!!! 28x5 = 140 days worth, that's one helluva saving!

You can no longer buy Merck Proscar, only generics. The patent on 5mg finasteride expired last year, so Merck ceased production. Anything you buy from Boots is kosher.

Barry did you ask your Doctor to prescribe Proscar or Finasteride? Did you get the prescription on your first visit? Isnt Proscar considered a 'Vanity' drug or something?

If you could let us know how it went with your Doctor that would be great, like what did they say etc..?

really? i was unaware of that. so then why do all these online pharmacies say they sell proscar and generic finasteride and are still charging more for the proscar?

now im more confused as what to get and where to order it from. i saw they had proscar at canadadrugs.com for cheap and was thinking about going there at first.

They could just be running down stocks.

Me too. Are you sure about that, Pondle?

Check out the Proscar.com website... "we anticipate a return to this market... look forward to bringing you the next breakthrough". I interpret that as meaning that they have exit the BPH market. I don't know why they would continue production now that the patent has expired and generics are licensed.

I didn't even go to see any the doctors face to face, I wrote in. There 4 doctors at my surgery, I went to see 3 of them in person (to get Propecia) and all of them refused to prescribe it to me, all gave me the scare stories of how it makes your dick shrivel up etc etc and pretty much told me to stop wasting their time and get over my hair loss. Nice eh?
I kinda lost faith in my doctors after that so went ahead and brought Propecia online. After 6 months or so (and some good results on that) I wrote into the 4th doctor saying Look, I've been taking Propecia now, I'm 100% confident of it's authenticity because of the signature minor side effects, I can provide photographic evidence that it works for me if you want, now just give it to me!! - or words to that effect lol.
I finally got the prescription for Propecia and that was a year and a half ago now so the other day I decided to write in to the same bloke and again, argued the advantages of using Proscar (ie more cost effective) and how I would cut it into 5ths and sure enough, he did it for me.

So I recommend you do the same thing, if you get on well enough with your GP then go for a consultation and like I did in the letters, make sure you know what you're talking about and assure them you're not gonna go chucking 5mg of the stuff down your neck every day then maybe it'll work.

The money I'm gonna be saving now is incredible, I'm really chuffed.
