Online drugs: Why cheaper isn't always better

10:41 PM PST on Monday, March 1, 2004

By ELISA HAHN / KING 5 News

We are a nation ready to pop a better pill, lining up at pharmacies around the corner, across the border and along the information highway.

The Food and Drug Administration estimates three to four million Americans are buying lower-cost foreign drugs, because to many, better means cheaper.

But at what price to your health? In some cases, unscrupulous businesses are only too happy to sell you something that just looks like the drug you need, but contains little or none of the actual drug.

We purchased popular drugs online from some Mexican and Canadian pharmacies. Weeks later, the first to arrive was v**** in a hand-addressed envelope, clearly postmarked from India.

Inside was a little cardboard, a few sheets of paper, the bill from our Mexican on-line pharmacy, a plastic bag and four unmarked pills.

But the pill had absolutely none of the active ingredient. While it wouldn’t hurt you physically, it could take a psychological toll.

“His dreams would be deflated to say the least,â€

Haha, well i'm sure thats true to some extent, but if you get proper Cipla stuff I wouldn't worry. Cipla are a proper drug company just like Merk and just like GKS they just happen to be based in india. I'm sure they are a lot of dodgy people out there willing to sell you any sh*t, but just make sure if you buy generics they are genuine Cipla. Even in ER, I duno those of you who watch it?? When Carter was in Africa they were using generic aid's drugs from India because they are so much cheaper then US ones and they even explained the whole patent system.

And I doubt this is true, but come on you know what the US is like they love to create a fear in everything. This could just be a scare tactic so stop people from buying perscription drugs on the net?? Yeah its a bit of a long shot but you know how the media works.

Basically I would just be careful if you do intent to buy generic drugs make sure its from a legit website, saying all that though? Just because your product comes in all the geniune packageing i.e Merik doesn't necessarly mean it is legit. I guess we all take a risk when buying perscription drugs over the net.
