Funny thing about Avodart (Dutasteride) trials ...

Check out the link: http://www.hairlosshelp.com/html/Avodar ... Launch.cfm and scroll down and you'll see a table of side effects, incidence %, and the following:

"The Phase III BPH trials for Dutasteride were conducted on 4300 male subjects between the ages of 47 and 94 years old, 90% of them being Caucasian. The average age was 66 years old and the participants received either a placebo or a 0.5mg daily dose of Dutasteride. 2158 men received the placebo and 2166 of the men received Dutasteride. A total of 267 subjects (6% of each treatment group) were withdrawn from the studies due to adverse experiences, usually associated with the reproductive system. Withdrawal due to adverse events considered by the investigators to have a reasonable possibility of being caused by the medication occurred in 3% of the subjects receiving Dutasteride and in 2% of the subjects receiving the placebo."

The average age is 66! Now, how many 66 year olds are going to be able to notice sexual side effects? At that age, most of them already have sexual problems and probably don't think much of it. Secondly, test subjects were given only 0.50 mg of the drug, whereas a lot of dutasteride users that use the drug for male pattern baldness are poppin' 1.0-2.50 mg.

Just some food for thought. Fortunately, the Propecia trials were done with a "normal" age group -- 18-41.

Yes, not many 66 year olds would notice sexual side effects. It is a drug for a prostate condition, you know.

There was a phase where .5 mg and 2.5 mg doses were given. At least, the bar graph they posted showed results from .5 mg, 2.5mg and maybe 1 mg dutasteride vs. Finasteride 5 mg? Don't remember exactly.

Remember, the dutasteride tests were for effectiveness on BPH, not male pattern baldness - hence the older sample. What would be interesting is to compare it against the introductory tests for Proscar.

Yep. You're exactly right -- it was used for male pattern baldness.

But I have a feeling if they released the drug for male pattern baldness that the side effects would be much higher than the ones reported by Propecia users.

I understand that dutasteride is very effective. But how healthy could it be to completely stall your production of DHT? As a consequence, test. and estrogen levels must skyrockey compared to finasteride -- putting the body in a really weird state.

Err .. first line should read "it was used for BPH"

Must be the Propecia 'causing me to become dyslexic! Another side effect! Will it every go away? How many minutes/hours/days/weeks/months? Anyone had permanent brain damage due to Propecia?! What's that?! Aneurysm! Migraines! Lupus?! Is it lupus?!!
