Looks ok considering that's designed for limited equipment. I just add prioritize the the Bench, Squat, Lunges, Pullover and Rows over the other stuff.

I do those exercises with a set of dumbbells 2-3 days a week when I'm not biking or running. I have noticed my arms are getting toned and my stomach is starting to look more like it's in shape than flab.

I just am not a fan of gyms. I prefer to work out on my own.

I couldn't imagine life without the gym, I enjoy it very much.

If I quit the gym and worked out on my own, then I'd be missing out on a lot of good friends I have at the gym, as well as seeing the female hotties' asses in spandex, their erect nipples through sweat-moistened lycra, as well as the free blow job from the old trolls who hang out in the mens' sauna. Nothing is better than a nice sauna soak with the pungent aroma of poppers wafting around.............

Hehe, the bj's in the men's sauna are hard to walk away from.

I never have time for the gym, can folks really get toned from handweights?

not really, just like anything else in life, there are no shortcuts.

I know I enjoy occasional humor, but ironically, my post above is actually quite serious. Well, I don't actually accept BJs in the sauna, but they are there for the taking.

Me too... never really went to gyms for more than a few weeks in a row. I much prefer to work out at home. It's something I have just gotten used to - my setup and my (lol) embarrassingly small workout area in the garage.

I have been to gyms though, usually to get motivated again, or convenience when I'm away. I focus so much more doing it in my own privacy:

- I don't have to dress up to work out at home (I can train in my underwear if I want!)
- I can go straight to the kitchen for my post workout meal
- I don't have to impress ANYONE but myself
- I can have whatever music I want playing
- I don't have to wait for equipment - and my weights are already set up for my needs
- I don't get distracted (by women)
- I can come home from work and train straight away
- It's so much less hassle in the long run

I know a lot of people will disagree with this - this is just the system that works for me, and ultimately that's what it's about. I could easily pay for gym membership, better training clothes, ipod etc. ...but I'd procrastinate so much more and wouldn't be training half as much as I do at the moment

I'm with you Maxpwr, figuratively speaking that is, I'm not hiding out in your loft with oni and a bottle of chloroform.

For me, the convenience of a home gym (well, a bench, weights and a rowing machine) outweighs even the lack of "female hotties' asses in spandex", as Gard so eloquently put it. Oh and the whole exercising in underwear thing, you're not the only one, something my rowing machine's seat is all too aware of.

Excellent! I worry about these things... :(

Distractions are the last thing I need when I'm training. I'm there for one thing and 1 thing only! And nothing beats coming straight from work and being able to strip off and put whatever you find on and get straight into training. Of course more often than not I DON'T find anything and it DOES end up being in my undies *lol* (try not to picture it)

I respect anyone who does train at gyms and health clubs. I would so do it if it were more convenient. But it's not... I've found what works for me.

not really, just like anything else in life, there are no shortcuts.

Um yes you can... all those exercises effectively targeted muscle groups. The only variation factor you have to add is reps and weight involved.

Most dumbell sets come up to 40lbs ( 2 x 20lbs if you split them ). All you need to do is purchase some extra weights to add on if your strength training. Up the reps if your stamina training. Because unless your REALLY weak a 20lb split is going to get very light after a few weeks.

I have actually started doing this very thing myself seeing I live in an apartment ..... I'm a 3rd shifter .... and the only 24/7 gym is like 30-45 minutes away.
I do about 3 miles on the tredmill in my apt complex and some various hand weight things like on that site ever other day. Just started less then a month ago and already seeing definite results. Lost 4 lbs and muscle shaping noticed.

I know its not the most effective way but for my means its working just fine and is indeed possible. By no means do i think you can get ripped or body build .. but you can get toned just fine.

just dumbbells can only get you so far...if you are serious about it...you need a flat bench and incline bench dip station pull up bar...a squat rack would be nice.

i doubt someone is gonna be able to afford a full range of of dumbbells anyway....i think what the poster meant is buying a couple sets of dumbbells and just using those...i know for myself i need 20lb dumbells (for side laterals) all the way up to 100lbs...just buying a set of 30s and a set of 40s wont get you very far. Its best to join a gym.

Oh i know it won't get you far as far as being ripped or gigantic muscles .. but with a regular routine those weights will keep you toned or build you up to a point. I have one of those inflatable balls that my g/f uses for her workouts that i use as a flat/incline with the dumbbells. It actually feels better then a bench on my back.

those giant balls are garbage....i could imaged hoisting up 80lb incline dumbbell press on a ball like that.

i dont really thing have a couple of sets of dumbbells will get you far at all....if you want to get in decent shape your going to have to invest in a lot of equipment or join a gym.

even if you use water was weight, it has so much volume, and so unstable. You can't be as intense either if you are constantly adjusting weight on your adjustible dumbbells.

um... if that's what you think they're for, then uh... no comment :shakehead:

Dumbbells are a minimum requirement in anyone's setup. I agree you cannot do a hell of a lot with just a set of them, but if you add a barbell or two, a bench setup and possibly a pulldown setup and you have got good exercises for every muscle group. There's no reason why you can't get decent results from the bare essentials.

I have achieved awesome results from my cumbersome setup. I practice good form, failure, isolation and advanced techniques just as a lot of gym junkies do and I won't have anyone telling me I could have got better results from a gym, just 'cos they have better / more machines and free weights. The concepts are still the same...

I suppose the main thing is having the space for equipment. Affording it shouldn't be a problem at all - just look in the classifieds or trading post. It's amazing how many people have great exercise systems lying in storage that have only been used a few times (from that brief inspirational period of their life that they were going to "get fit"). Unsurprisingly these people are usually quite happy to sell their whole setup for a fraction of the price they got it for.

i was responding to him...not you. For anabolic purposes i think those balls are a waste.

Hey guys!
I'm very very very skinny. I'd like to gain some muscles.
But I hate going to gym. I already hated when I had more hair, because I hate people who workout for years looking and joking about my thinness.
Now that i'm balding it's worse. They'll joke about my hair too.

So, I like the idea of exercising at home.
I started running on the beach. It's great for low stress.
But I want to gain weight.

What are your tips?
Is it hard/expensive to have some exercizing tools at home?
What do you sugest?

I just recently started going to a gym and I worried about the same things... well mostly about being thin and weak and just starting out. Anyway, I think all the gym goers realize that everyone has to start somewhere. They've probably been skinny too, or fat, before starting exercising. Luckily the gym I go to is very quiet, I can usually do my 40 mins exercise all alone. It's also a free gym which is nice.
