Hello Guys,

Had some questions about finpecia. I am 25 years old and my dad and grandad are bald. I have a good amount of hair right now but i can feel its thinning. I went to a dermatologist and he suggested me 5% regaine solution and finpecia 1 mg daily. I started the medicine and felt headaches and dizziness. Went to the doctor again and she told me to discontinue regaine for a week and then start the 2% one. Its been 5 days since i stopped. The headaches have gone but however i feel moody and depressed and feel a dip in my alertness. Is it due to minoxidil? I have been having the finpecia for 2 weeks now. Any solutions?
Have attached a photo of my existing hair.

The headaches are possibly unrelated but if they are from a treatment likely it’s minoxidil. They would go away with time. Though more importantly it doesn’t look like you have a reason to start regaine just yet. If you do not have agressive balding you should give the finasteride 3-6 months to see if it will give the result you are looking for. At which point if you continue to lose ground or you are looking for regrowth you may add minoxidil to your regimen.

The moodiness and deppression are likely due to the thinning of your hair and the resulting psychological weight. The dip in alertness may be from finasteride but can be manageable as it is not the worst side effect you can encounter. Some may wish that brain fog was the only side of finasteride and others consider it a deal breaker. You will have to decide but most anyone past Norwood 2 would gladly accept a dip in alertness as the only side effect of having more hair.

If you’re not receding or balding fast, wait to start minoxidil. Stay on finasteride.

Thank you for your answer. Yes im not rapidly thinning and in fact my hair line is same since the last 5 years. However im balding all over like diffuse thinning. The crown and hairline are still fine. The sides are balding. Balding is happening at a normal rate not very fast. Im not depressed about the hair loss yet because still noone can notice it. However i went to the doctor just to preserve my existing hair. So i will take finasteride for 1-2 months. Just one question, the effects are not permanent, are they.

Most people report that ‘recovery’ from finasteride side effects can take anywhere from a week or two or even months. There is actually an entire culture based around Propecia side effects called ‘post finasteride syndrome’ where people claim that the drug is more or less poison and that they never recovered from it. No one knows for certain as the majority of people taking it don’t experience any side effects at all. It’s a big gray area. It is the only fda approved 5ar inhibitor prescribed for hairloss and it is extremely effective. It’s not for everyone though because some do experience sides and some don’t even respond to it at all.

I have experienced side effects from finasteride and have quit the drug twice and recovered. I am now taking the risk again. It is your decision but if you are that afraid you may want to wait until your hair loss becomes more of an issue to weigh your options. At which point you may sorely regret not taking it so give it some good thought and do some reasearch.

The most accessible alternatives are topical anti androgens but fewer on these treatments alone see success than those who just use finasteride. There are other options though. Finasteride is just the best and most convenient if you can handle the sides.

Yes reading up on the internet can scare you, reading all the effects people have had. Does this brain fog or whatever they call it go away after a while? Because in my job, i must be alert at all times. I am afraid yes about getting a girl and whether she would like me if i go bald. People say just accept it but it is difficult to do that since im a good looking guy if i have hair. My girlfriend says its okay it doesnt matter. However i would like to try to keep my hair atleast. Thank you again for your prompt response.

I think for some it does go away and for some it gets worse. You may want to read about a lower dosage. There are studies that show that less than .5 milligrams will lower almost just as much dht as the full 1-1.25 milligram dose that everyone is prescribed. There are reports that this dose can have the desired affect while minimizing or completely reducing the side effects.

You don’t need to accept it there are options and it is up to you to decide what’s important. Everyone telling you it’s okay has likely never experienced the impact and consequence of permanent hair loss.

Agreed. May i ask what sides were you facing? And also did lowering the dose help you with the same? The doctor told me people take this for years without problems. I wonder if that is true and if it is, then these people certainly didnt read up about it like us!

What the doctor was saying is true. The majority of people using finasteride do not experience anything other than the desired affect. Not everyone gets sides. The more you read the more terrible it will probably sound. This is because no one taking the drug successfully without side effects will spend all day on the internet talking about how wonderful it is. These people would much rather move on and live life. The point of a drug in pill form is to not have to waste time thinking about it. Those experiencing ‘post finasteride syndrome’ feel cheated and are not only angry about the side effects of the drug but also probably angry about continuing to lose hair. The extreme cases would love to spend all the time they have complaining about this drug, and if it’s true that they never recovered could you blame them ? sh*t f*****g deal male pattern baldness.

I agree. Their rants are totally understandable. However, i would like you to answer the question i asked about your personal experience with the drug. Please let me know.

Had 0.5 mg yesterday and the sides are definitely less. However, it does feel like im high on a drug or something. I am confused whether to continue or no.
