Hello there,

I'm a female suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia. I figured that since there are so many more men than than women taking Finasteride for hairloss, I'll ask my question on this website. I have just been prescribed Finasteride and I'm quite hesitant to start on it because some of the docs told me that I'll be killing my liver by taking it over a long period of time. Are there any fellows who could comment on the long-term effects of Finasteride on their overall health, especially liver/kidney functioning, etc? Thank you very much! I'm actually quite surprised by what I read on this website. I did not realize until now that guys are also taking the problem of their hair loss quite seriously.

The warning is for pregnant women with a male fetus only.

Some doctors will have liver enzyme and other blood work done before and a few weeks after taking finasteride. The drug itself has been out for nearly 20 years and taken by men. I have seen some studies women who have had success with finasteride and dutasteride. As always, this is something you would not want to do on your own.

Besides finasteride, women can use nizoral, minoxidil and spironolactone (pill or topical).
If you dont want to take any pills then you can use those instead.

As regards causing liver failure - the question is do you have liver problems to begin with? Are you an alcoholic or binge drinker? If yes, to either of those two questions then of course, if you are any medication it will put an additional burden on the liver since the livers role is to metabolise medicines before removal from the body. Your liver is self-regenerating so any slight damage can be fixed unless the liver is overwhelmed.
