Finasteride - When do the side effects start?

Hi,

I have been on finasteride for about a month now and I have not noticed any side effects from it as of yet. My sex drive is as strong as it was before and my tendency to get random erections has been as frequent as before too. I am going to turn 20 in January and so I still consider myself to be young, but even then, I have always had an unusually high libido since puberty. Is one month too early for any side effects to take place or am I just one of the few that hasn't gotten any side effects from finasteride? I take a quarter of 5 mg (1.25 mg) Proscar daily by the way.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm 21 been on finasteride for about 2 and a half months, so i'm no expert, but sides started for me the first week of taking it and haven't subsided yet.

I'd say if you haven't got sides one month in, you probably won't at all. And if you do and it doesn't subside in a couple of months, just stop taking it and you should be fine.

Perhaps one of the veterans on the forums can give you some better insight. Personally, I think you'll be fine.

Thanks for the reply! The one thing that worries me is that I am not sure how effective finasteride would be for hair loss in my case because I always thought that the amount of DHT in your body and your libido would be directly related. If my libido doesn't change much at all while being on finasteride, then doesn't that mean that the drug is not effectively reducing the DHT in my body to fight hair loss?

It's really sad that you're actually expecting to get side effects. I'm sure this is a direct result of reading internet forums. The bolded statement above is just silly and shows how misinformed you are. You're actually among the majority since most people do not get side effects from finasteride. My best advice would be to stop reading hair loss forums, take your finasteride, and evaluate your hair in 6-12 months. If you keep looking for side effects, you may end up imagining them.

Some people start getting sides before they even start the medication. Beaner's post was a good one.

Mine started 8 months in the first time. Groin pain, ED, low libido, etc
Then like a week the second and third. Some people never get sides.

I still believe sides only really affect those with low DHT, or high Estrogen to begin with.

Many have at least some kind of side effect from the drug even if it's something really minor like lightheadedness, although very few have the dreaded side effects that we hear horror stories about... like total impotence. Peronally, at seven months in, I still have watery semen and hardly ever get morning wood, but I can still get hard when I need to while awake which is all that really matters in my book. Bright side, I don't piss all over the bathroom floor in the morning anymore because I'm not trying to push while rockin' a quarter chub.
