 wtf?!?! im not a whinner but this is crazy, i didnt know such a small dose (1.25) could do that much! ive taken this drug before and and stopped due to the same side effect, then a while back i thought there was no way it could of been the finasteride, so i tried it again and sure enough, not trying to discourage anyone cause i know this is not a common side effect for people. but i am a strong minded person and i felt crazy bad about myself when on it. tried fluridil but the irritation due to the alcohol was way too much, the only thing ive been able to be consistant on is min, msm, and nizoral. what else could i try to eliminate dht? not to be negative, TREATMENTS DO WORK, just have to find what works for you. thx guys.

FINASTERIDE IS USED IN THE TREATMENT OF ADROGENETIC alopecia (Androgenetic Alopecia) and has been shown to have minimal adverse effects. In this study, researchers evaluated the effect of finasteride on mood disturbance.

23 patients were treated with finasteride, 1 mg/day orally, for Androgenetic Alopecia. 19/23 patients in this study developed a mood disturbance (moderate to severe depression) during treatment. Depression, which significatively impaired sociofamilial relations, sleep, and eating behavior, was associated to marked anxiety in some cases, developed after 9-19 weeks of treatment with finasteride, and promptly resolved after suspension of the drug. Two patients accepted reintroduction to the drag, and depression relapsed within 2 weeks. Depression as an adverse effect of finasteride has been reported only once. Larger, controlled studies are needed to evaluate whether these results are accurate.

Altomare G, Capella GL. Depression circumstantially related to the administration of finasteride for androgenetic alopecia. J Dermatol 2002 Oct; 29(10):665-9.

I don't get it. If it's only been reported once, then why did 19 of the 23 experience depression?

prehaps they mean only one trial (the 19/23) trial, and that no other trial has shown similar results, or prehaps no one else has done a trial looking into this?

Hmmm. 19 out 23 is a really high percentage though. Even if it's just this one study.

Have you experienced depression, tynanW?

Bump this up.

This study seems to contradict itself.

So which is it?

19/23 developing moderate to severe depression during treatment.

or...

Depression as an adverse effect of finasteride being only reported once?

The logic behind this is simple.

You're depleting your body of a major hormone that relates to feeling Virility and Libido and Alive and Sexy and Macho Man sexiness ....

You take that away... and you're going to have a period of dryness. Not so sexy. Not so Burt Reynolds. Not so Cannonball run ... Not so Magnum P.I. ...

Body feels blah. You're losing your hair. You feel like crap. You're desperate for change. Your hormones are being screwed with. Hormones directly affect mood. Ask any girl who still has her periods.

Thats all it is. A fluctuation. Usually temporary along with everything else, until the body overcompensates for the loss and returns things to normal.

Not a big mystery.

As a side note, during the 3 months I was on Saw Palmetto I was EXTREMELY depressed. To the point of breaking down in tears for no reason. Literally not knowing why. Felt like I had a 20 ton boulder on my back and dark clouds around me all day, until I stopped taking it. Instantly felt a boost in outlook, esteem, and morale. One of the many reasons me no likey Saw Palmetto-ey.

Hehe... does anyone ever consider the fact that maybe the reason they're depressed is because they're losing their freakin' hair?

That would be my case. Not bad yet, but we'll see how things go as my hairloss progresses.

The funny thing is, I've always had very high self-esteem. I don't think badly about myself at all. The thing about hairloss is that it makes you worry how OTHER people will think of you. In some ways, it just seems out of your hands.

It would have gone away but this is your decision. You are the only one who knows truly whether it was that severe or not. Severe enough to stop taking a treatment that would have probably eliminated your hair loss concerns for a good 5 to 8 years.

Honestly, you just dropped the one that really works. The others, we can't give any assurances about. Just some hopeful words of well wishing at the most :) The Propecia replacement I am semi-sold on is Revivogen and Topical spironolactone 5%. Both. And that's another issue - that combo is expensive as hell. spironolactone comes in a little tray and is something like $35. Might last you a couple weeks. Revivogen is $33 per month. I suppose $70 versus $55 for Propecia isn't too different. But you should use both, not just one or the other... if you've dropped Propecia.

You can probably just do the minoxidil and Nizoral. MSM isn't really up there on the scale of "treatments". Unless you're just taking it as a supplement for yourself. Definitely wouldn't say its mandatory though.
