I'm 56 years old. I started taking finasteride about 6 weeks ago.

On the average, how long should it take for me to start seeing positive results?

What do you guys do to keep a check on how you're progressing?

Thanks

Take many photos under consistent amd harsh light.

Propecia will in most cases just maintain, so you probably won't see anything.
But generally roughly at month six, you should see some thickening.

6 months to 2 years for most people. I've been on it 4.5 years.

I was losing it rapidly and it's been incredibly slow progress; surprisingly, only now approaching the 5 year mark can I say there's significant improvement. The hairs are the same quality on top as on the sides and back.

The best thing I ever did was dump Rogaine. I know it works for some people and it did for me for 2 years, then it went to sh*t.

So.... most of us will see no "improvement"?

Whaat? Dude, what was it like the first two years?
I've been on finasteride 13 months now.... and few months ago my hairline became very thin.... vellus looking hair thin.
I'm staying on it another 11 months to see what happens.
But 5 years? Damn. Any improvement on the hairline?

How common is it that finasteride causes some improvement beyond the normal 1-2 years?

The quality of hairs just as you're describing wasn't great for me at 2 years but I just stuck with it and I remained utterly dedicated. It's been incredibly slow as I've mentioned; I guess I just required many, many hair cycles and each time with a subtle improvement. Coming up to 5 years the hairline is definitely stronger now. My advice is don't give up. It works for people in different ways.

I'd already lost my gains from using Rogaine for 2+ years, so luckily for me it didn't get any worse when I dropped it. I was constantly in a shedding state using it, and I was always concerned.
