finasteride and hairline

On HLH it is commonly believed that finasteride can do damage to ones hairline because the follicles a long the hair line are even more sensitive to androgens, mainly testosterone.

I don't want my hair line to recede any further. Can anyone else comment on this?

It's a thoery which could explain it, but I don't think there's any evidence. I've only ever read of about 3-5 people claiming it made their hairline worse.

finasteride hasn't helped my hairline (I've also been applying spironolactone, which apparently converts Testosterone at the scalp - So should have covered that base if it were factor), but I certainly wouldn't say it's made it worse than what it would have been anyway.

At what stage was your hair loss before getting on finasteride?
I started pretty early. It's been slow, I noticed it when I was 17....did nothing until I was 21.

My actual recession isn't too bad (NW2), but I have a lot of minaturisation. (If you looked at my thinning as if the hair wasn't there, I'd be in the NW3 region).

Hey just think about it. DHT causes hairloss, men who are genetically proned to male pattern baldness will lose their hair, many men will eventually become a Norwood five or six. If they take Finasteride to inhibit DHT they will slow their hairloss, if they don't they will lose all of their hair including their hairline. So what do they have to lose by taking Finasteride? They will lose their hairline anyway if they don't take it. The only differance is they will lose it years sooner if they don't inhibit DHT.

The question was never about whether or not it is worth taking finasteride.

Ahh, thanks.

I dunno how much more recession I can handle on my hair line.

I've been on finasteride for 3, nearly 4, weeks now and although it is far to early to make any claims my shedding seems to be similar to the loss pre-male pattern baldness.

Although this makes no sense since hairs are kept for 2 weeks before they fall out it is still a hopeful observation.
