I remember reading a post in response to a question about what finasteride will do and a poster beautifuly laid out the simple truth:

1. It will stop your hairloss and and
regrow hair.

2. It will slow hairloss.

3. It will accelerate hairloss.

I apologize to the other forum users if I keep harping on this subject but it needs to be acknowledged the same as the other side effects and guys need to understand that option 3 is a possibility. I believe that men with low DHT should either not take finasteride or take it at a much smaller dose. HLH has the most examples of finasteride ruining people's hair. I couldn't believe how many I found. Just do a thorough search, HairLossTalk.com has many as well. They were all identical or similar to mine. I knew of course about sexual sides and was concerned as it's talked about a lot, but I never heard any warnings about accelerated hairloss. People would think twice about this drug when presented with the possibility of option 3, I know I would have. In order to benefit from finasteride, your DHT levels need to be on the high side. Get a DHT test before considering taking finasteride, it can serve as a guide to how you may respond since we can't measure scalp DHT levels. The sticky for users new to hairloss is very long and needs to be simplified with information about varying doses and why some may benefit from a smaller dose, most will benefit from the standard dose, and some probably shouldn't be taking it at all.

It is clear that the continous use of a med that try to alter the hair cycle can disturb it, one reason is that the med will act over all hairs, and our scalp hair is asynchronous type, and for some hair is good but not in others
In a few words the posibility 3 is possibly real, more in healthy scalp hair people. The question would be, is finasteride a good preventive method for common hairloss? My answer is no.

Nothing is impossible in medicine for both good and bad. So yes 3 is definitely possible, but so are sexual sides or gyno. That being said its still like playing the lottery and the odds are in your favor for finasteride not against you. So I think its still worth trying even with the risk that it speeds up or sheds and never gets back to baseline.
Just because 3 could happen doesnt mean its smart to not try finasteride. Its the best maintenance thing in existence bar none.
