Well, today I had went to my local GP to ask him for a referral to a dermatologist who specialises in hair loss.

I was of the opinion from these forums that GP's know sh*t about hairloss but to my surprise my local GP turned out to be very helpful.

He said I did not need to go to a Dermatologist for hairloss treatments as options were only Finasteride and Minoxidil.

He had no problems in prescribing proscar for me and asked me to take 1/4 of it every day. He also told me that he takes proscar regularly and its a very safe drug. Hes been taking it for years.

The best part was when he told me that his son was using propecia. :D

When i raised the concern about side effects from Finasteride..he said none of his patients had any sides. He also reckoned that Finasteride is a very safe medicine and it will help people with hairloss.

He advised me to just cut the proscar from my teeth and not to worry if its not perfect. he thought its better that all the finasteride goes into the system rather than going waste as a powder on table if i try to cut it.

So as soon as i got out of his clinic, I went to local pharmacy and bought Proscar finally. Just bit the first proscar pill, I think i have eaten 1/3rd of it.

I will update at month 3. :)

What a cool GP. I wish they were all like that.

Not only that...

I forgot to tell...he said to me..that if i did not take finasteride, I will be Norwood 7 by 6 years. :freaked: :freaked: :freaked: :freaked: :(

Then he told me a lot of successful and encouraging stories about his previous patients for whom he prescribed Finasteride.

He also said that I should save minoxidil for later use and not exhaust all the options yet. :)

I suppose I got lucky to bump into this GP.

Wow that's a great doctor you found. I can't imagine trying to bite 1/4 of proscar though. I cut mine on a piece of paper, put the 3 biggest pieces away and swallow the smallest piece+scrape the dust from the paper. Nothing goes to waste!

Hmm good idea.

I bite the proscar with the front teeth..and cuts 1/4th for me. You just have to make sure that u cover the Proscar well with finger and only allow it out that has to be bitten.

Im not sure it's possible for anyone to tell how male pattern baldness will progress over the years. Nobody know's this, I believe that it has been mentioned by Dr Lee that noone can predict how male pattern baldness will progress on an individual.

I just went on proscar a few weeks back. No sides yet, but we'll see. I have no problem just cutting it into 4 pieces with a pill cutter. I got a nice one at Walmart for $4.00. I've had no problem cutting it into 4 equal pieces. There is a small amount of powder, but consider I only want 1mg and I'm taking 1.25 (give or take a few points), I'm not worried about the powder factor.

What are you guys doing about a one month prescription of proscar lasting 4 months instead? I mean, my doctor just told me to take the whole pill, but I decided to follow the advice of most here and take 1.25mg. He wrote me a prescription for 6 months. I get batches in 90 day supply from my ins. co. mail order pharmacy (only $50!!!). So each 90 day supply will last me a year! My 6 month prescription is really 2 years. I just think he might be concerned or suspicious if I go back in 2 years for a prescription refill for a 6 month prescrip from over 1.5 years ago. I would just stockpile the stuff, but the date seems to suggest only storing them for a year. I think I may just call in at 6 months, get one more 6 month supply but only have the first 90 day sent. Then I could still call in every 6 months, have him write the prescrip, and then just toss it. They don't know if I'm actually ordering the prescrip or not.

I'm at the very early stages of hairloss - only light thinning at the back of the head. I hope this slows it down, stops it, or even thickens things up back there. I'm going to give it at least one full year and then I may consider transplants, which I realize I may need to revisit. And if I do hair transplant, I would still stay on finasteride.

But I feel for all of us. I have received a few comments on my thinning hair, but only when I'm sitting and someone comes right up to be from behind. It's generally not noticable and I started using dermatch (small amount) and it has really helped.
