Excercise to lose bulk

Hola,

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but is anyone aware of any way to reduce muscle mass through excercise?

I would like to tone my legs as I have really heavy calves (they are big for a guy, so they look absurd in a skirt).

Anyone got any ideas here?

Hola bonita,

if you want thin legs, stop using your legs

The only way to reduce muscle mass is to burn protein. I'm not sure how healthy this is though. I lost 20kg in 2006 and 2007. I could survive hours on caffeine and nicotine.

My legs are actually too thin now, I'm 6'0" and even size 32 jeans are slightly large for me. When I was a teenager, my friends used to tease me that my legs were very "beautiful".

Do not try this at home, but here is my recipe to success.
- get a stressful job. the stress will kill you, and losing weight will come naturally
- don't bother about exercising, you don't want more muscle weight.
- drink lots of coffee
- smoke a pack of ciggies a day
- food? what is that?

Lots of seated excercise and a H2O diet for me then :)

Cheers matey, I was considering a very low cal diet for a few weeks to get some lbs of before my hols. I'll give it a try (with caution). I already have a quite demanding job, so I'm ok in on that count.

Does the caffene help with the lack of energy and general tiredness from a very low calorie diet?

On a more serious note...

Theoretically speaking, aerobic exercises should be good for you. As the body gets lighter, the legs don't need to carry so much weight and they get thinner in time.

I wasn't being serious about coffee and cigarette diet. I feel like I'm not helping now, I'm just confusing you.

Basically, I'm one of those that gets up in the morning, makes a strong coffee and lights a cigarette. It certainly kills all the appetite. I guess that's why lots smokers pile on the weight after quitting.

No no, it's fine, I was being too stoic in my response :)
(Note to self, use more smileys).

I've been trying to alter my workout to focus as little on my calves as possible, seated machines, thighs, bum etc. and completely ditch things like squats and dips for a few months at least.

You want either muscle atrophy so the dont use your legs plan is one way or a more healthy idea is more cardio. Swimming could be a good idea think long distances done slowly.

cardio will not thin your calves... it will make them bigger and more toned... its just the type of muscle it is.... if you want to grow your calves, go for more reps......

anyway, i have no idea how to make them smaller!

Start running long distances. The body will burn off muscle and fat in an effort to make you suited for long distance running. If you don't believe me, let me ask you this. Have you ever seen a muscular marathon runner?

I rest my case.

thats a pretty stupid way to just decrease the size of your calves...

however, harie is right as you will decrease the size of your calves eventually, but you will also decrease the size of every other muscle in your body and look like a skeleton...

do you know what a marathon runner looks like... is that what you want to look like?

I agree... the only problem is that this takes a long time and lots of commitment.

A half an hour session might burn 400-500cal. To lose a pound of fat, you'd need 7 sessions of 30 mins. The most you can lose through running is 2 pounds a month. To have significant results you have to do it for a long time.

As I said, I lost 20 kg. I lost the first 10kg through running, I was doing 20 miles a week at one point. Then I lost another 10 kg through unhealthy lifestyle. Running long distance definitely burns fat and protein (read as muscle).

If you think there's actually a "spot muscle reduction" for just calves, you're crazy. If you aren't training them, they're not going to grow, but since she said she had always had big calves, short of lots of cardio (which will waste away all muscle), there's no way to lose just calf muscle.
