Early Hair Loss - What do I do?

Hi,

I am a 21 year old male. I have always had a squared-off hairline on the front, shaped like a door or window. Today I just realized that I have a receding hairline, just like picture #2 on the Norwood Scale but obviously on a much lower level.
Needless to say, this FREAKED me out  because I JUST noticed it today and I bet this is something that has been slowly happening for months and I bet chicks notice this instantly.

I ran to the store today and picked up a bottle of Progaine shampoo and this tablet product called Nu Hair. Then I went online and purchased a bottle of Tricomin Revitalizing Shampoo on impulse. Finally, I called a local "Center for hair restoration" to setup an appointment.

Anyways, to the point:
I've been spending most of today doing as much research as possible, but the options are overwhelming, particularly due to my lack of experience with this and my desire NOT to take the wrong steps.

Based on my situation, what should I be doing to restore my receding hairline and to prevent any more hair loss?

Also, when I went to the store, I wanted to purchase Rogaine as that seems to be like the first thing to do when you notice hairless, but the boxes in the store said that you're not supposed to apply it to a receding hairline, or that it doesn't help a receding hairline. What's the deal?

Somebody please help, this all hit me in the face today, and it is killing me. I see this as weakness, and I just can't stand it, particularly at such a young age. It is scaring me to look in the mirror now.

My point: What do I do to get my hairline back, and to prevent any possible future hair loss? The rest of my hair is perfect except for my receding hairline.

Thanks.

Research this website. Cancel your appointment.

Go to your doctor. Get on Propecia.

Go to the store. Get Rogaine (Yes, it works on the hairline, just not as well)

Get Nizoral dandruff shampoo. You can cancel the rest.

This is called the Big 3 because they are the most fundamental treatments in our hair loss regimens. They are proven. These WILL get you some results.

Thank you for the response. My brother has the same recessed hairline as I do but apparently he's taking the "eh, what are you gonna do" approach.

I just go to my family physician for the Propecia?

shielded, before you use rogain you have to remember, that it is treatment you have to be consistant with if you stop you will lose any gains you got from it. So if you want to use propecia and nizoral so start off with that could be an idea. But that depends on how much you've receded, because minoxidil is the regrowth stimulant so it might be needed depending on how 'bad' it is. If you can post a pic of your hair that will help us identify if u need minoxidil

yes you go to your physician, or you can order it online.

Relax your hair line isnt that bad. You should be happy you caught it early! I would recommend propecia and nizoral and continue using the rogain as aplunk suggested. The rogain might cause shedding but this is different for everyone. You have done the right thing by starting treatment early. Goodluck and keep us updated

I never relax and that's what allowed me to catch this, but yeah I know what you mean. :)

Thank you for the advice. I am going to my doctor for the Propecia and I will purchase Nizoral.

I only take a Q-tip and apply the rogaine to the parts of my forehead, which I believe should be much less than the 1ml per dose application and I will use the Propecia, and Nizoral twice a week or whatever I'm supposed to do. Will this "big 3" combination mess with my testosterone and my dick? Will this affect my sexual drive???

It shouldnt affect your dick or sex drive. But there is a very small chance, not to worry about..

i would hold off on the rogaine for now and just go with finasteride and nizoral and a good copper peptide.

i know you're freaking out, but you don't want to make any rash decisions and get locked into a tedious regimin. Remember, whatever you start today will be a LIFETIME committment.

you should get good results from just finasteride, and the nizoral and copper peptide will give you good scalp health. you can always add rogaine later.

i agree with all the above posters - having looked at your pics I see alot of resemblance in my own hair situation - when I was in my early 20s I had temple recession (looked at pics and noticed my forehead looked bigger then usual) pretty much ignored it - fast forward to age 27 and I was diffusing like a mofo - basically hair was getting more and more see-thru plus the begginings of the dreaded "patch" at the top of my head -

After experiementing with a few exotic treatments I now stick with Tricomin, finasteride, spironolactone and Nizoral - whils the spironolactone isnt proven I like to use it anyway just in case (you can read about it on the main site) - topicals are by and large a hassle so choose carefully or it can end up taking over your life. The only thing I take comfort in about starting late is that I got to enjoy my early 20s not worrying about this sh!t even if it did mean I lost more hair

do your reasearch

make your decision

the rest is down to luck and patience

Thanks for the responses everyone.

The side effects I have been reading about on this forum regarding finasteride are kind of scaring me, so I am not sure I want to go that route....at least not yet.

I am thinking for now I want to use Rogaine 5% to hopefully bring back the receding hairline (don't mind the commitment), and use Tricomin to keep the rest of my hair growing thick.

Thanks for all the advice...I know it's pretty much fine now, but it was the "in the long run" that was scaring me. I'll continue reading threads and the rest of this site for more info.

I'm in the same position as you. I started using Nizoral on 1.1.06, I just got my Revitalize Kit (Copper Pepptides) and my Xandrox 5% and spironolactone 2% is in the mail.

I would rather be hooked on topicals than take finasteride, but that's just my opinion, not trying to scare anyone :).

I have the exact same condition. I'm 21 and wear my hair short and have a squared off hairline but recently I noticed that my right temple was thinning out. I checked out some recent pics and it's been visible since January, but I only noticed it now.

I've been reading about Propecia/finasteride and the side effects are definitely rough. Even though they may only happen in a small percentage of users, I still don't want to risk anything. I'd feel better about my health applying topicals than getting on a pill, IMO.

I just started treatment this week with 5% Rogaine on my hairline, and I also ordered some Tricomin shampoo that should come next week. Hopefully these two products can help me out...
