Drastic hair loss

Hi
I am 20 years old. For the last one year, I have been losing a lot of hair. There have been days when I've lost 100-150 strands of hair just by running my fingers through my hair for about 15 minutes. In the last one year I've noticed that the hair density on the top central part of my head is drastically decreasing. My hairline though is fine for a 20 year old I think. I'm extremely worried. Please assist me in any future course of action.

PS: My dad is bald but there is no baldness with my mom and her family.

it comes from both sides of the family. have a friend look at where the follicle enters the skin to see if it is red, which could be alopecia aurta. also, use a mirror to see it from top view, and figure out if it looks at all like the men on the norwood scale. go to the avator part of your profile to see the scale. If it is patchy, and not in the pattern, it could be alopecia aurta. go to http://www.altbaldspot.com to read about all types of hair loss.

probably is male pattern baldness. propecia is the usual first step. just read this board for other treatments. you sound like you are catching it early. you will be fine if you take action.

telogen effluvium can be caused by a car crash, pregnancy, surgery, or maybe some extreme emotional destress such as severe depression. I don't think it is caused by minor worries about your hair if you are not extremely depressed, and it could not have affected you since any worry happened after your hair fell out.

Thanks for the quick reply. I checked the follicle when it enters the skin, it wasn't red. It definitely isn't alopecia areata.
As far as the Norwood Scale is concerned, if things go worse I'll be heading towards a norwood 5A.
Please give me details about what kind of treatment I should be undergoing. Should I seek the advice of a doctor? If yes, what kind of doctor?
What about all the medicines available (propecin etc.)? How much will they cost and how effective are they usually?
