Dr. Umar –18,745 graft SFET surgery completed

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to start a “before†thread on some of the various forums. I am a Norwood 6 that hopes to return to the best place possible with my donor supply. I have worn a hair piece for years and would like to be rid of it if possible. I have done my best to research the options through the forums, through the web, and by meeting with some of the doctors. I also met with a patient as I was considering options. I would like to post some of my “before†pictures here. Then in 6 months I will show my progress and then continue from there. I am not an expert and not a doctor. I am hoping to learn from everyone else and if anyone can learn from my experience that would be great also.

After meeting with doctors it became apparent that my scalp hair was not enough to get to where I hoped to be. My estimate of scalp donor hair was in the range from 2500 to maybe 4000 graphs from the different doctors. I then considered my options concerning SFET. My body hair supply was considered average. So my case was a simple one. The good news was that no repair work from previous surgeries was required. The bad news was that I was an average case from a donor perspective considering scalp and body.

I researched the options for about 2 years. I have just concluded 2 and ½ weeks with Dr. Umar in Redondo Beach, CA. We completed 18,745 graphs of head, beard, and body hair. We made a complete first pass of the entire scalp. Things seem very good so far, but now only time will tell. I may request a much smaller second pass in 6 to 9 months to continue toward my final goal of 22,000 – 25,000 graphs which was always the plan. But we will have to evaluate the results from now until then.

I am very impressed with Dr. Umar and his staff at the DermHair Clinic, http://www.dermhairclinic.com. They are very professional, very serious about their craft and very caring towards the patient. I honestly don’t know how things will proceed over the next several months. But, based on all of my research and experience so far, I am hoping for the best and I appreciate everyone’s support.

At this point I know the following; 1) I feel very confident that there will be no scarring or injury from the extraction sites, 2) the pain from surgery was minimal in my opinion and 3) so far things are looking positive.

I will be posting pictures and I will keep everyone updated. In addition, I am sure that Dr. Umar will keep current pictures as time allows as at http://www.dermhairclinic.com.[/url]

How many of your grafts came from scalp hair and how many from body hair?

How did you distribute them?

Where did the body hair grafts come from?

Thanks.

25,000 grafts is a lot, but won't go to far on a NW6. At least he will have coverage.

Thanks to everyone for their replies.

global:

Here are the answers to your questions.

~3700 grafts came from the scalp
~3700 grafts from the beard

The remaining came from the body. The total for this round was 18,745 grafts.
The parts of the body used were:

Legs: mostly to hairline and front
Chest
Abdomen
thighs
pubic
forearms
It was all mixed up throughout the scalp.

Also, there are some interesting videos at:

You are correct that NW6 is an enormous amount of scalp to cover. I am very interested to see how this turns out. At this point, our graft count is 18,745 grafts. If all goes well, I do expect there to be a second procedure to thicken things up a bit. But now only time will tell. I did feel very optimistic that we were able to cover the entire scalp during the first procedure.

spanky123:

I respect your views about transplants and just shaving the head. I wanted to give this a try and now I am just hoping for the best.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and please keep your fingers crossed for me.

i think it's absolutely disgusting. why not just take some *** hair and stick it up there if you're gonna go down that road?

After a while it just seemed like another possible donor area. But initially when I had heard of other people using that as a donor I wasn't too sure what to make of it. But I won't take it to the next level though per the previous post. I was actually more concerned with the beard area as a donor for fear of anything happenning to my face. But all of the extraction areas have healed completely at the three week mark.

sorry ehp, i didn't mean to attack you. i have no problem with BHTs or even you using pubic hair. if i was going to get one though, i'd definitely confine it to arms, legs, chest, stuff like that, etc.

no problem JayMan;

thanks for the reply.

this is all pretty interesting stuff and I enjoy the different perspectives and humor on the forums.

I would certainly understand wanting to confine it to arms, legs, chest, and so on.

First of all good luck with your procedure i hope that everything turns good for you. Second, i dont understand why 25,000 graphs would not be enough to cover a nw6. Okey its not going to be superthick, but the way i see it, IF everything goes as planned it will give you a nw2 with some thinning.

I am also very curius about the cost of this procedure. I can understand if you do not want to share it, but perhaps you could give an idea of the price range.

P.S. Oh, and PLEASE post pictures. I am really really interested to see how this goes, especially after 12-14months.

Hello sphlanx2006,

Thank you for the good luck and thank you for the encouraging words about coverage. I am also hoping that the coverage should turn out to be pretty good. Covering a NW6 is no small task, but we are giving it a try. As it turned out, we covered the whole scalp and my hairline right now is around a Norwood 0. He spent quite a bit of detailed effort on the hairline and temple work so I am excited to see how it all turns out. I need to get some pictures out here ! We will probably choose to go back and thicken things up in about nine months.

It has been almost exactly a month since the surgery and I am going through the shedding stage, although quite a bit of the hair has remained.

Concerning the cost;

Our original plan was to do 15,000 grafts at $5 per graft which, of course, is a total of $ 75,000. We had some time left over so we kept going until the whole scalp was covered. We stopped when the scalp was covered which is how we ended up with the total of 18,745 grafts. Since those were "extra" the charge was $ 4.5 for those remaining grafts which was roughly an additional $18,000. So the total was in the neighborhood of $ 96,000.

This was done in 13 days. Monday through Friday. Then rested Saturday and Sunday. Then another Monday through Friday. Then rested Saturday and Sunday. Then Monday through Wednesday. We had some donor left and two days left on the schedule, but my scalp was full for this round so we had to stop. My expectation was to only cover half the scalp during this first procedure so I felt pretty optimistic.

I will get some pictures posted. I need to learn how to do that.

Thanks for your post.
