Key Quotes:

'Foods affect hormones quickly, anywhere from a few minutes to a few weeks'

'All in all, a high fat diet throws your hormonal balance into a tizzy. And this directly affects hair loss, since testosterone plays such a pivotal role in androgenetic alopecia and other hormonally triggered forms of hair loss'

'A high fat diet also reduces the amount of a protein known as sex hormone binding globulin, which keeps a sex hormone inactive until your body needs it. If you have less of this protein in your bloodstream, more testosterone will freely circulate, ready to be converted to hair follicle-killing DHT at the follicle if conditions are conducive.'

****A high-fat diet also contributes to the conversion of testosterone to DHT in another way: Oil glands in the hair follicle hold 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, and higher amounts of circulating hormones (due to a reduction of SHBG) including testosterone, can increase oil gland activity'****

'At the molecular level, balding can be viewed as a hormonal disturbance condition'

'Whether you lower DHT levels by using pharmaceutical drugs, herbal or natural treatments, or diet, the outcome is helpful as both a preventative measure and a treatment'

'How do you keep this tricky hormonal balance?...when you have the right ratio of protein to carbohyrates in your diet, you can control the eicosanoid hormones with druglike precision'

'In short, you are treating food like a prescription drug, delivering the right balance of protein and carbohydrate at every meal'

He also speaks loads about insulin and about how eating high blood sugar foods messes up your hormonal balance.

He recommends the following diet (his diet is the ZONE diet btw):

Protein: Consume lean protein sources including turkey, chicken, fish, red meat, and soy products.

Carbohyrates: Include fruits, vegetables and beans in your meals. Do not eat potatoes, pasta, and bread regularly. They are immediately converted to glucose and disturb insulin levels when your blood sugar rises very quickly and then falls. This is very bad for proper hormonal function and balance.

Monosaturated Fats: Use only the following oils in their whole form as fruits nuts or extracted oils: extra virgin olive oils, almond, avocado, cashew, macadamia, pecan, haelnut and pistachio.

Each meal = 30% protein, 40 % complex carbs, 30 % monosaturated fat.
