Dosage: Propecia vs. generic finasteride

I was prescribed Propecia 1 mg a few months ago. Turns out Walmart has generic finasteride 1 mg for about $32 cheaper.
So I called my doctor today and the nurse wouldn't prescribe it. She said 1 mg of generic does not meet the 'recommended' dosage since it's...generic.

Does that even make sense?

I purchased a 3 month supply of 1 mg finasteride from inhouse pharm. a month ago but customs hasn't released my package.

After two months, my Finpecia supply has finally arrived. Damn customs.
Still haven't taken the first pill. Do you guys recommend .5 or even .25 to start?
