Hey guys,

the dermatologist I saw a few days ago said that minoxidil is a waste of money and all it does is grow peach fuzz. I am seriously having a hard time believing this as I see soo many of you get great results with it. I understand that many of you are on DHT inhibitors in addition to minoxidil, but I'm inclined to think that at least some of that terminal regrowth is attributable to minoxidil. Am I right?

Thanks!

I've been using it recently and I've seen some new hair growth but I'm doing a few things so I'm not sure if it is actually helping or not. I'd give it 3-6 months.

The amount of regrowth is really contingent on how much thinning is present in the area in which you're applying the minoxidil. If it's a really thin area, you might see some hairs that are getting thin get thicker, some areas with almost no hair see some peach fuzz grow, and bald areas may not see any regrowth depending on how long the follicles have been dormant. Minoxidil is a growth stimulant, and it's main job is to reactivate dormant follicles as well as boost growth in areas that are thinning.

Any way you slice it, using it is better than not using it given there are very little serious side effects in comparison to the DHT inhibitors. I still use it despite no longer being on finasteride, as it is better than nothing in combating my male pattern baldness. Even if it buys me a few extra years before genetics win out, it'll have been worth it in my opinion. I won't be as naive to say that it will stop your balding, but it can at least be a buffer if you choose not to use finasteride. Since ditching finasteride, I've been using minoxidil only for about 9 months now, and my hair is holding on pretty well. That could just mean my male pattern baldness was operating at a slow pace to begin with, but either way I'm still using minoxidil anyway.
