Does microneedling as a monotherapy allow maintenance?

I'm 21 and have been slowly losing my hair since I was 18. For 9 months, I used a 1-mm dermaroller as a monotherapy (during the first month once a week, then once every two weeks) in combination with massages every other day (I don't know if it's really useful but at least it allows me to have hair that greases less quickly when I do it before my shampoos).

I totally stopped 2 months ago because I didn't really see any improvement, I felt like I was wasting my time, and since it gave me a lot of dandruff the next days I didn't see any reason to continue... but now since I stopped, my hairline has started to recede again.

Have other people had similar observations? What could be the scientific explanation behind this?
I have the impression that microneedling is effective for maintenance, and that once you stop, the shedding resumes... but maybe that's just bad luck, I'd like your opinion on that.
