I know most hairloss in men is caused by male pattern baldness but I was wondering if you could actually tell if hairloss is due to nutritional deficiencies or male pattern baldness just by looking at the hair?

An easy way to make a diagnostic that works most of the time :

If hair loss is located in the horseshoe area only, it is male pattern baldness.
If hair loss is located elsewhere (or everywhere), it's not male pattern baldness.

That being said, nutritional deficiencies can increase hair loss in the two cases.

can we reverse it with finasteride only? been on .25 mg/day. not doing much.

I don't think you can reverse miniaturization, at least not significantly. Unless you can stimulate growth through minoxidil, hormones, and/or a strict diet.

Finasteride stops the cause of Androgenetic Alopecia, it doesn't help hair in itself.

diet? how? u mean nutrition and minerals wise? which hormones stimulate scalp hair growth?

how would explain this? and the different responses to the drug apart from an aggressive male pattern baldness?

Pardon me for saying this but arent you suggesting that if miniaturisation is a tough cookie to crack with finasteride then regrowth is almost impossible.

maintaining is a success. Have you lost more hair since starting it? If not I would say it is doing enough

Its hard to tell, had longer hair at baseline and got a haircut, hair looks like **** :/. well i would post photos later in my thread, please do take look if you find time

The thing is that i have thinning in the hair that differntiates between Norwood 2 and Norwood 3, if i could thicken that up and maintain long term like for 5 -6 years i would be grateful.

so miniaturization in general is a sign of male pattern baldness or only at the hairline and crown? what if there is miniaturization on the sides as well?

No such thing as miniturization on the sides.
