does alcohol or caffeine aggravate the symptoms of MBP?

Perhaps I am psyching myself out a little here, but I am curious as to whether alcohol or caffeine contributes to the rate that MBP progresses

Over the past year I used to drink ~800mg - 1.2g of caffeine a day (between 2-3 large starbucks black coffees, I know, it's a LOT). I don't drink alcohol excessively (maybe 1 drink a week if I feel like it), but I am still curious about that.

Would it make things worse? I imagine cortisol plays a key factor in MBP, but I don't know how much cortisol coffee would release. Alcohol would probably cause some iron deficiency, but can't imagine much more.

Alcohol does cause hairloss, here's how:

  • Hair loss due to alcohol consumption is mainly due to the fact thatalcohol affects the levels of estrogen and zinc in the body, which subsequently affect hair growth.
    1. Excessive drinking RAISES the level of estrogen, high levels of estrogen result in hair loss.
    2. Excessive drinking REDUCES zinc levels in the body. Zinc is essential for healthy hair growth.
  • In addition, constant consumption of alcohol can also induce a lower level of vitamins B and C in your body.
  • Furthermore, folic acid levels can also fall which is also vital in maintaining healthy and strong hair.

It is unknown whether Caffeine causes hair loss or not. However too much of anything can cause changes to your body, eventually and indirectly affecting your hair.

Hope this helps.

one thing I am curious about; what is considered the threshold of alcohol at which this would become a significant problem? What is considered excessive?

Well.. According to patient. uk, the recommended intake is as follows:

  • [*=left]Men should drink no more than 21 units of alcohol per week, no more than four units in any one day, and have at least two alcohol-free days a week.
[*=left]Women should drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, no more than three units in any one day, and have at least two alcohol-free days a week.
[*=left]Pregnant women. Advice from the Department of Health states that ... "pregnant women or women trying to conceive should not drink alcohol at all. If they do choose to drink, to minimise the risk to the baby, they should not drink more than 1-2 units of alcohol once or twice a week and should not get drunk".

if you have hair loss - drinking even a little amount is excessive!

Also - it is not just because alcohol affects the hormones, its also that its pure sugar! and sugar feeds inflammation, which also causes and speeds up hair loss..

Many reports that alcohol is beneficial to hair, possibly due to it's estrogenic effects.

Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, so it's bad news.

"causes" hair loss? I'm not sure about that one... is there a source on it?
I heard when people have diabetes, they tend to have hair thinning or hair loss if it is not under control. Not sure about healthy people and sugar consumption though...

Quite a pain in the arse that almost any health problems in people with weak hair genetics lose it quite quickly.

Metabolism probably plays a big role for the trigger.

Caffeine is supposed to be beneficial for hair. Alot of hairloss shampoo contain caffeine in it.
