Do You Retain Your Hair By Stopping Minoxidil At A Certain Point?

I have been taking finasteride for many years. I have recently starting using minoxidil 3 months ago. And I am almost certain it is working.

I was reading some information which suggestd that taking minoxidil on its own becomes virtually useless after a year if you are still losing your hair because the growth gets overtaken by the balding. That is unless you are taking finasteride as well of course.

As I understand it finasteride is a retention agent and minoxidil is a growth agent. So I am wondering if I end up hitting my desired end of hair is it then feasible to stop bothering with minoxidil and rely on finasteride to retain the hair that has been gained? Or is it minoxidil for life ?

Hi. It's a common question. Sadly no. You have to keep using both to keep your hair. Generally people who stop taking one or other usually lose hair.

For now the big three are finasteride minoxidil and ketoconazole shampoo.

Oh well. Will have to keep the routine up then I guess. But putting foam on your head twice a day is a small price to pay for a nice head of hair I guess.

You really do not need to use it twice a day, once is sufficient. Later on you may be able to decrease it to every other day.

If the hair that grows is solely due to Minoxidil, then that hair will eventually be lost upon cessation. If it just helped hair that would have grown without Minoxidil, then that hair would still be fine.

I am not sure whether the hair would have remained if i had started finasteride earlier though is what I am wondering. I started it 16 years ago and it seems like my hairline has barely changed since then. But think I will carry on with minoxidil just in case.
