Can someone let me know if there is a distinction between the two. My hair appears to be thinning all over my head. I just checked the sides of my head and they appear to be thinning just as much, if not more, than the top of my head. No idea whats going on here, but its getting really wierd and troubling. Any help would be apprecieated.

Is the bottom of your back thinning as much? The tops of the sides do disappear on a NW7 pattern:

But the bottoms of your sides should not be thinning as much as your top. They certainly shouldn't be thinning more. And the bottom part under your crown should not be thinning either, especially not at your age.

I would go to a dermatologist. It could be diffuse unpatterned alopecia or it could be Telogen Effluvium or something. I am a diffuse thinner which you can tell if you look at my pics in my buzzed hair thread on the last couple pages. But I am NOT thinning at all on the sides or back. So I have diffuse patterned alopecia. My sides and back and hairline stay intact.

You could have diffuse unpatterned alopecia, which just means that you will likely never be able to get a transplant because you will have no stable permanent zone from which to extract follicular units.

Anyway, see a doctor.

As for female alopecia versus diffuse, it's a bit different. With females, the part in the hair on the center of the scalp just gets wider and wider, like this:

But some men do thin in that pattern, and some women actually have receding hairlines.

again, when you start male pattern baldness, it is my opinion that you have a diffuse thinning all over, then more miniaturization in the typical places continues, thats my experience, and similar to what i see in others who i can tell are just starting
