Diffuse Thinners: Did You Thicken Up Hair With finasteride Only?

Hey guys,

after reading probably all success stories of diffuse thinners in the world, I came to the conclusion that finasteride and minoxidil is the combo diffuse thinners should go for. I caught my diffuse thinning relaltively early and started to take 1,25mg 6 weeks ago. So far no change. My initial plan was to take it for 6 months and see then how it's working for me before decididing to add minoxidil. Would you recommend me to stick with that plan or add minoxidil right now? I have the feeling that finasteride only doesn't really work for diffuse thinners.

8 months, unfortunately my hair has gotten worse. After a year I may add minoxidil and switch to dutasteride.

Hey bro,

I'm following your journey as well bc we have a similar hair loss pattern.
I'm just at the beginning of my treatments but I can't stop thinking about adding minoxidil. I'm pretty sure we diffusers won't get the result we're looking for with finasteride only. However, every time I'm thinking about the possible shed my heart is diving crazy af. The 6 month mark is gonna be my time adding minoxidil

Why are you waiting that long? Finasteride solo is obviously giving you not the result you're looking for. I would add minoxidil/duta if I would be in your shoes.

I’m mostly waiting because of the same fears as you. I think my hair has stabilized within the last few months (I hope) and I can still look like a full head with toppik. If I have a brutal shed in my crown toppik may not work anymore and that’ll be a major hit.

My friends and family have told me it hasn’t gotten worse the past few months so I’m starting to dermaroll to see if I can put some life back into those follicles first. I may (probably) add minoxidil at the year mark and switch over to dutasteride as well. I believe if I have stabilized, which I hope is the case (it’s hard to tell with my longer hair), then adding dutasteride might give me the boost. Although I have heard that dutasteride can cause a major shed as well.

So I guess the tldr is I’m just scared shitless of a monstrous shed

So every case is different, but in general, from what I've seen, finasteride works best at keeping hair whereas minoxidil works best at regrowing hair. Most of the best recovery stories are where people used both. Shedding on minoxidil happens at the beginning, but most are happy they did so 3 months later. If I were to start minoxidil it would be a time of the year when its cold, and I could wear hats a lot just in case I ended up shedding a lot. But some don't even notice a shed though so I guess it all comes down to the individual.

I am a diffused thinner, 1mg Fina a day, 2x Rogaine Foam 2x Stemoxydine 2x week Nizoral. My hair is better than ever...

Did you experience a shed and did you start finasteride and min at the same time?

I ve seen your thread man. Your current status after the success with finasteride is like my current status at the beginning of the treatment. We have a similat hair texture as well. Are you South European/Middle Eastern? How is your recent shedding going on?

I was on minoxidil Foam for years beforehand. And when I added Fina I too .5mgs for like 6months plus then upped the dosage to 1mg.

But to answer your question no I didn’t have a “shed”.

With minoxidil foam it “helps” slow down the male pattern baldness process, but make no mistake about it without something like Fina your not gonna get your density back.

I saw a photo of my hair pre Fina (about 5 years ago) and I was like wow my hair looks so much better now...

My opinion as a diffused thinner slowly add dosage of Fina if your worried about a massive shed, but get on it...

I think 6 weeks is a short time to see any results. However, you might be best adding minoxidil sooner rather than later. I get what you're saying about wanting to see which is giving you the results. My case was that I took finasteride for 2 years and only just about maintained (at best). I expected more so was quite disappointed and quit finasteride and as a last ditch I got on minoxidil last January. I started with foam but found it wasn't effective for me. In April I started on liquid and started to see some progress so got back on finasteride as well and added some derma-rolling. My derma-roller was a crap one though so a few months ago I got a better one and I really think I'm seeing a lot of progress. My hair is really starting to thicken up and looks much better when dry. When wet it's still pretty awful but I'm encouraged. So my opinion would be use both. Also, some good shampoos and derma-rolling. I follow @Somebody 's method, derma-rolling for absorption primarily. So far so good. I'm diffuse by the way.

Im a diffuse thinner and finasteride only kept me from losing any more hair, and minoxidil did thicken up my hair line.

I'm not sure what I am, I just know my parents came from Mexico. As for my shedding it's still happening but it feels like it's growing back thicker. We shall see soon. People say to wait a full year and this April will be my 1 year.

So far I'm happy.
