is there a difference in holding time / or a better cleaning when putting the glue on my head only and not on the unit and then on my head.

I believe the reason instructions dictate to apply to your scalp and base, is because results is because a superior attachment, compared to single surface application..

Manufacturers want you to have the best outcome possible, they've tried every which way to get the best result.
