Hi all,

Does anyone know the difference between Propecia 5mg and Finasteride 5mg?

I know both are used for curing hair loss in the long term. However, when I compared the active and inactive ingredients for both these drugs, I see that Propecia contains 1mg Finasteride.

Which one is more effective in curing the hair loss? Has anyone used any of these before?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Vignesh.

There is no 5mg Propecia. There is 5mg Proscar which is for BHP. Proscar contains 5mg of Finasteride...so you might be getting confused by that.

Is there a generic version of proscar verses normal proscar? I really want to find a doctor to prescribe me it, but I feel bad doctor shopping for it. I dont want to buy it online, but I want to try it and see how I react to it.

Yes, he would. It's literally the same thing, just without the brand name attached to it. I think (with insurance, perhaps?) you can get a script for it filled at walmart for about $10

My problem is getting the prescription. I have been debating whether to buy it online, but the prices are still really high. Also scared of a drug coming from india somewhere.

What kind of doctor wouldn't give you a prescription for it? It's not like he's prescribing morphine or marijuana.

My doctor wouldn't. He said that Proscar wasn't FDA approved for male pattern baldness treatment. I explained that the active ingredient was finasteride, and that I wanted to quarter the pills. He still held fast that, "I see your point. But I'm not going to prescribe you a drug for a problem that you don't have."

I ordered it from 4rx and am going to switch doctors :)

What a dick, that's why I called the dermatologist's office ahead of time and asked if he ever prescribed finasteride for balding.

When I met him I knew he was sympathetic, he had one of the worst plastered combovers I've ever seen.

Part of the problem is right now you have to maintain and prevent hair loss. Yes its risky taking propecia if you have no major male pattern baldness but the problem is after you have a big bald spot in 2 years after doing nothing there is no way to get that hair back. The other problem is a lot of doctors need to see a bald spot or major hair loss before prescribing you something but by then its too late.

I've run into a similar problem... my derm won't prescribe 5mg finasteride and let me cut the pills. Her assistant said "there's no generic version we prescribe." Do you guys have any advice on finding a derm who would prescribe it?

Otherwise, I was thinking I would just order it online through inhouse pharmacy.

Do what I did and, when you call their office, ask them if he or she prescribes finasteride for baldness. That got me the guy I needed.

I can't believe they said their is no generic finasteride. I hate when doctors don't know something so they lie about it.
