Hello guys.

Ok this is a stupid question but i'm interested in yout opinions.

I've read that DHT is essential in bone health and growth, dont know if this is entirely truth though.

And my question is: Is it stupid to think that someone taking finasteride or dutasteride may actually LOSE height?

thanks

Don't take finasteride while a teenager, you grow vertically until ~17, but then you probably gain some natural strength until ~23.

Moreover, it increases estrogen levels by an average of ~15%. It's well documented that higher estrogen means decreased growth, as estrogen contributes to killing off your growth plates, which are between your bones.

Not likely to lose height... Bones don't shrink.

I'm on full hormone replacement therapy (I'm MTF trans) and I've lost about 1-1.5" in height but that's due to a pelvic tilt from estrogen, which isn't something you should need to worry about.

May prematurely stop growth though... I have no idea about that.

I don't think finasteride will have any effect on height. Especially if you're out of puberty and your growth has slowed

you probably wouldn't lose height, but as a developing teenager, I could imagine that you may not grow as tall as you would without finasteride.

Thanks for the replies.

Well i started dutasteride when i was 20 years and 6 months, so i doubt i'd have much more height to gain.

lol, you wont get shorter. But it will stunt your growth, so if you think your growth plates are still open, I would reconsider taking dutasteride

Why would dutasteride cause less harm than finasteride?

They both raise estrogen, which shrinks the growth plates.

I understand that for those who are going through puberty, taking finasteride or dutasteride can slow their development if estrogen levels raise a lot.

But for those who already pass puberty, it doesnt have any impact, right?

Is there anyone here who started finasteride or dutasteride soon (17/18 y old for example) and kept growing fine?

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I've started dutasteride when i was 20, i dont think my plates would be open by that time.

I'm also not sure if the 15% increasing in estrogen would be enough to close the plates. We will never know that.

I don't think the 15% increase in estrogen will significantly shrink the growth plates. It would make them close a little faster than they might have but I think the difference is negligible if finasteride is started late in puberty. The real concern is that DHT appears to have a significant effect on height velocity, though it's important to note that height velocity is low at this age anyway. This means the plates would be closing slightly quicker and less height would be gained during that shortened time period. You really have to weigh the pros and cons of the medication when taking it at a relatively young age like 17 or 18.

Bones don't shrinkJ ust get xrays of your wrist and knees and see if they are closed. The epiphyseal closure is almost always done by 18.
