well even if im successful with my minoxidil and propecia (which looks likely as i am regrowing pretty well) - that will only mean ill be good on the vertex and slight temple regrowth

however even with the max regrowth i can get my temples will still look seriosly receeded and unacceptable. i need acutal work on the hairline and idunno how im gonna be able to do this

would surgery be the only option here?

comments appreciated

you should wait the results from minoxidil and propecia for 6-12 months, then if you are not satisfied , yeah surgical might be the best option even though i would wait for HM ...

I am getting good regrowth at the front, top and temples after over a year of various treatments. Read my posts for further info. I need to write an instruction manual. My advice is don't consider transplants until you have given everything sensibly recommended to you at least a few years to work. I was totally bald for twenty years, and am just beginning to get the result I craved for, ie. some hair on my head, and improving week by week. Recently minaturised follicles must therefore have a much greater chance of recovery by the methods I use. We are the pioneers. Good luck.

yeah my main thing is that am i right in thinking after the folliciles have miniturised to the point of just being non existant there is no hope in regrowth with minoxidil/Propecia ?

in which case i would have to take surgery if i wanted to really improve my hairline

Years ago various specialists told me that once the follicles have stopped growing they die. This was an incorrect assumption. Follices can remain dormant for many years, as I and others have discovered. Some people guess statistics when they don't really know, ie. they assume three or five years as a cut off point. My follicles were dormant/minaturised/assumed dead/written off/lock the door and throw away the key kind of thing for over twenty years. You just have to be patient with the unhurried hair growth cycle. Get a magnifying mirror and check the progress at this finer vellus level, week by week. If the vellus is improving, you are getting somewhere. It may take a year or more to turn vellus into young terminal hair. Recovery is complicated process, so be patient with your research too, it should all fall into place with dilligence.

Boru,

I used proscar for 8 months but no difference.. Also, have been using minoxidil for the past 2 years... I quit Proscar 2 months ago after being frustrated.. I think minoxidil helped me but I needed some more support.. it has become even worse in the past one year.. im not sure what to do at this point.. I am considering a transplant but my heart doesn;t allow me. I have been to a couple dermotologists and now I think its about time for a final one.. I used to break proscar into 4 sometimes 5 and never took an exact 1 mg.. if anything, this could be a reason that it did not work for the 8 months i used it.. I am considering taking propecia now and also folligen . infact, im depressed and confused what to do.. should i spend so much money on this or simply go for a transplant... do you have any suggestions..

Thanks in advance.

The 12 - 14 month treatment period is the test. 8 months is not enough. I had some new vellus from in the first few months, because it is easier to see a little green grass in totally barren earth. However, I had to keep at my routine and improve my methods, and it was only after over one year that much of the vellus has started to turn into terminal hairs. Patience is 50% of the battle, I have been tempted to give up many times, but I look in the magnifying mirror and see the progress and potential. I reaffirm my goal.
If you have recently lost your hair, recovery should be faster, but you need to research all the options. Surgery should be the last resort, because even transplanted hair is subject to deterioration. Grafts are prone to balding as well.
It will work, if you get serious, if you want to succeed, because if an old shiny baldy like me can do it (I'm only 48!), so can you.

Strangely enough, though some argue it cannot be effective because the mollecules are too big, my first treatment was saw palmetto tincture, which produced some vellus. One by one, I added finasteride (propecia and later proscar), minoxidil with retinol cream and golden emu oil, and my own "Heath Robinson" type machine/method which I believe may increase the oxygen levels in the skin. I can't yet prove that it really works, but because I have turned a significant amount of vellus into new terminal hairs of varied length, I just keep banging on with my complex regime. My girlfriend's daughter thinks I am some kind of mad scientist, so I lock the door while I'm "plugged in" for 20 minutes!
I have a fairly light comb back now, though I can see it improving month by month. For a joke I sometimes do a comb over with the hair that has grown on the sides, but it might frighten small children and bus conductors so I don't go out like that. The crown is a bit sparse, but my girlfriend assures me that the vellus is improving there too. I could mention all the herbs and my salmon/fenugreek diet, but I need to a book to cover everything.
Eventually I will post my scalp pictures here, but I believe that the full result will take a few more years of fighting.

Thank you for telling us your regimen

Frankly speakng I tried Propecia 7 years ago and got a very good result in just one month ! That reduced my hair loss noticeably and I had small regrowth at the front... but I gave it up 'cos I was afraid of sides.
I didn't see any but ....i got scared , that's it.

I'm seeing lots of small little dark hairs starting to fill in the temples. I attribute it to the laser comb increasing circulation, adding the nizoral, and the recent addition of copper pepties. Hopefully this is just the beginning of good regrowth!

Where exactly are you regrowing this hair. Any at the temple and hairline?

Boru is 100% correct about the follicle not dying off like most people think. Im at 8 mos. on my regimen and I have a TON of thick light brown vellus hair nearly 2 inches in front of my hairline. I can't even remember having any hair in these places. Has to be at least 15 + years since I've had hair in this area on my temples. If this vellus turns into terminal hair, I will have a better hairline that I can ever remember having in my life.
