Could higher dose of finasteride cause more hair loss?

Hello,
first time poster here, I have been searching through the forums and i couldn't find definite answer. I was wondering if someone might have some insight into this issue. It would really helpful as I am becoming more and more desperate. I have been to my doctor and he prescribed me 2.5 mg finasteride (half the generic 5mg finasteride tablet) and i have been taking this for 6 months. And it seems to me that my hair loss is getting worse. I then read that you are only supposed to take a quarter of the tablet. Is more finasteride actually counter productive and could it make hair loss worse?

your doctor clearly is not well informed about Finasteride. Anything above about 1.5mg per day is probably worthless as it doesn't inhibit any further DHT. I would advise taking 1/4 of a tablet.

However I can't really see how a higher dose would make more hair fall out. You may not be a good responder to finasteride - is doesn't work for everybody - or you may be experiencing a shed. You should really give Finasteride at least a year before you decide whether it's working for you or not

ok, thank you. So do you think I should just lower my dosage to 1/4 of the tablet after being on 1/2 a tablet for 6 moths?

I just hope that it won't make things worse after lowering the dose from 1/2 tablet to 1/4 tablet. The reason I asked this question was that while researching finasteride I found out that it actually might increase the number of androgen receptors and so increase hair loss, or cause "hyperandrogenicity"? Is this all areal?
