I just consulted with a prominent hair transplant surgeon (no names for now) and his sales person talked about "combination follicular units" basically, taking two adjacent follicular units from the donor tissue and transplanting them as a combo. Is this unusual? Is it better worse or the same as moving them separately?
I think that is called a mini graft, which is bad. The only time they do that is if two separate units are close enough together to almost make a single unit, and the doctor does not want to risk killing them by separating them. But if they are normal spacing, they should not do that.
are you sure the rep didn't say " follicular clusters"? most follicular units have a cluster of 1,2,3, and sometimes 4 hairs per follicular unit. if this is the case then your okay. but if they intend to combine the follicular units then it is old school technology and doesn't give a natural look. it gives the doll head effect and you want to stay clear of that.
There is nothing wrong with combining smaller FU's to make larger ones. It is done routinely to add density for patients who have a shortage of 3's and 4's. For example, doctors will combine two 1's to form a 2 hair FU. Or a 1 and 2 to form a 3 hair FU. What shouldn't happen is a combination that forms more than a 4 hair FU. Send the Doctor an email to get a clarification on this. Since he said "adjacent" FU's, I think he is probably referring to what CCS describes.
Gorpy is correct. BTW, you are undoubtedly referring to follicular unit "families" or "groupings", the latter term which many hair transplant docs refer to. Since you are considering this particular doctor, why don't you simply contact them and ask them to clarify?
