Hi all,
I just wanted to share my experiences so far with finasteride, minoxidil, and nizoral to add to the collective knowledge. First of all, I'm 27 years old and my hairline has likely been receding for about 5 years now. I first admitted to myself that this was happening about 2 years ago and begin seeking treatment options. I have already been using nizoral for years for dandruff control, and I began finasteride 8 months ago, along with a custom minoxidil solution that I get from a hair loss specialist in my area. This formula uses Retin-A as a vehicle for the minoxidil, but that's all I know. I use this solution once a day, and I take 1.25mg of finasteride once a day.
First of all, I never once experienced a single side effect. Nothing. Not even testicular pain. My sex drive is still very strong and I have a very healthy sexual relationship with my girlfriend. I haven't noticed any decrease in erections or watery semen (though, I don't really pay attention to the consistency of my semen either way). I also haven't really noticed any drastic shedding either, although it seems to vary for me day to day. Most days I don't see any alarming shedding going on (I may lose 5-15 hairs in and out of the shower). There have been a very few days where I thought that I was shedding more than normal, but again, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to this or specific shedding periods.
As far as I can tell from taking pictures every few months, nothing drastic has happened one way or the other in terms of growth or recession. I don't appear to have lost any more hair, although I don't know if I would have even without finasteride, as my hair loss isn't terribly aggressive. I do notice some of the thinner hairs around my temples becoming terminal/darker in color, but nothing really drastic. After spending a good amount of time studying my pictures and hairline, I can say that the finasteride/minoxidil has *potentially* maintained my hair. I'm still hopeful that I will see more noticeable results as I near the end of my first year of treatment.
Going forward, I will continue to post my experiences every few months. If something happens one way or the other in terms of loss/regrowth, I'll make sure to post pictures as evidence. For now, I'm at least happy that I don't seem to be getting any side effects from either finasteride or minoxidil and that my hair loss doesn't seem to be progressing. If anything, there are at least subtle signs that I can expect a bit of thickening/regrowth around my temples.
