Can Somebody Clear Up Some Things On Propecia?

I've always been put off of getting on finasteride due to the sexual side effects, which seem to be alot more common than the reported 2%, but recently from reading different forum posts it seems like it's not unusual for people to actually make their hair worse on it. I had previously assumed that propecia had an initial shedding phase that got rid of the old weak hairs to later replace them with healthier hair, but now the impression I have is that you go through periodic sheds which means that at some points in the year your hair looks good/ok and other parts of the year where it looks thinner than baseline. Am I off on this, or am I reading too much into the bad experiences of people who did not respond to the treatment?

How long should a shedding phase last? If you were several months in and still shedding heavily then is that an indication that finasteride isn't working for you?

This is more minoxidil with its hair cycle "synchronization". With finasteride I have never gone through repeated shedding phases. Or even an initial shedding phase.
