My background story ,53 year old male started with burning scalp 18 months ago constantly in pain and excessive hair loss to a point that was was frightening.I paid out for various private hair specialists and consulted my doctor but nobody had the answer.Doctors don’t see it as life threatening but it’s pushed me close to the edge.I’ve been on Minoxidil and finestranide since i was approx 25 under the supervision of a Harley Street specialist and I had kept such a good head of hair until the pain started. This is not as expensive as you think £100 consultation.
Ive carried out a lot of trawling the inter web and came across a post of a trial carried out in India. They had good and quick results using Propranolol an anti anxiety drug a very common drug,i believe it was in the Indian tricholigy medical journal.
My doctor would not prescribe these as it wasn’t for this condition so i went private. The tablets are a few pence to buy with a private prescription. In the end my Dr came on board when they see you are determined to get them anyway ,Private Dr cost £55 .I imagine most people with this condition are a little edgy and when you get stressed the pain is worse and you feel consumed by it.These tablets will calm it all down and calm you down in general and cope with life in general.i take a 40mg tablet and you can have up to 3 a day but a doctors guidance is essential. This will calm it down in a week.
On further surfing the net a common Certrizine tablet dissolved in distilled water and applied to scalp will calm it topically. This can be Benidryl or similar.Basically your body is attacking itself so anti histamines will help taken orally as well. Philip B Rejuvenating oil will calm it down when left on the scalp overnight it’s not cheap but it really helps.I hope this post aids some of you out there as it truely is debilitating and traumatic. Thanks for reading

Brother, I've been dealing with shedding scalp itch for 6 years. Massive shedding, everyday. Pain/burning itching.
Going to look into these options and see what I can do.
I've always been afraid of finasteride... I know, I know I shouldn't be but I worry i'll be dependent on it. I also worry that I technically don't need it as my hair loss is,,, strange I guess i'd say. Even have underarm and eyebrow shedding far accessively.

@Dashing_uk - so a quick google search indicates the excessive shedding and hair loss that accompanied beta blockers such as propranolol...

you sure you should be making this suggestion?!

I've also been dealing with this since 2019. Got a random relief last year but it came back out of nowhere. Currently I have some days of relief, others where my scalp burns insanely, to the point I need to wash immediately to feel relieved. Do you still have hair? I found out that if I alternate shampoos my scalp gets calmer. What I'm using is: virchy dercos anti dandruff with salicylic acid (once a week) + ketoconazole 2% (once a week) + elseve hydra detox every day when I'm not using the other two. Edit: I used to stretch my washes to every other day, but I noticed the oiliness makes things worse.

The derm I went to told me it was T.E but I'm not sure. I wish I could regain my density back, and I'm certain the culprit of my hair shedding is this itchiness/burning. I'm not receding, my problem is the quality of the hair. All points to diffuse thinning, but these two derms insist is T.E. or CTE

Have you ruled out Lichen Planopilaris as a cause for scalp burning, itch and shedding. LPP can present as diffuse hair loss. Eyebrow, eyelash, underarm loss can be all be part of LPP depending on the sub-type.

Otc Cetirizine, 10mg 1x or 2x day, may help to reduce the burning pain for some with LPP. Normally, a treatment protocol of anti-inflammatory and/or immuno-suppressant medications are required to get it under control. Ideally, get to a dermatologist and get a biopsy to rule LPP out.

Hi, thanks for your response. It's been some time since this comment here and I would like to say that my itching/tingling is gone. I don't know what I did other than washing my hair everyday, changing pillowcases every other day and using ketoconazole twice a week to give me relief. I can't tell you exactly when it stopped either. At some point I buzzed my hair and said 'f*** it'. After months of suffering I finally can say I found relief and I won this, at least it's what it seems.

Sometimes, here and then, I get an itchy spot on my scalp but I can clearly differ it from the previous one, that made me shed like a dog. Next week it will be a month since I buzzed my hair, and when the 2nd month come, I will post an update. I'm trying not to take pictures as for now because the anxiety load was too much and it certainly messed up with my mental heatlh (note: for 2 years). Some people here said that I wasn't balding and was a troll, but my shedding was insane and I tolerated this pain for too much time. I've been to three derms and all of them had different conclusions, but the persistent one was 'T.E with SD'. My loss was overall, despite the temples being intact. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a biopsy done since my town is a shithole, nor I had money to travel only to do so. Nevertheless, I am slowly getting my confidence back, because boy, the itchiness/pain drove me crazy and sad most part of the time.

hi groovy gang (strap in again here we go round 2) just to add a little more info and ive just checked my diagnosis from Eva that was emailed to me before i left the 20 minute consultation.
Part of my condition was seborrheac dermatitis.I had a stressful job that i have now down graded and i could feel the burning/crawling feeling get worse as the stress built up .She recommended Lemon Balm Theonine supplement tablets that calm your nervous system and settle your stress.
I really cant stress enough how much Eva will give you a true evaluation of whats going on with your scalp.
The other 2 so called specialist had a visual look and couldnt see anything wrong .Under her micro camera she showed me my issues and reassured me new hairs were growing but over run by the debris on my scalp so never grew much bigger so my hair became diffuse.

Eva will also write to you doctor for specific blood tests if she suspects the cause.I tried to upload my letter but it became to blurry to read. Please see her in action and google ‘the hair clinic i think it was on channel 5.
The shampoo (mentioned in the previous post) that i purchased direct from Eva gave me a start to the relief from the burning that night i used it.

This is all a vicious circle of hair loss causing stress and the stress causing hair loss.

i have tried Dutastride 0.5 mg but you get more bang for your buck out of a 5mg finasteride.I dont think i would try for children on the tablets but i did do just that my daughter is now 28 and a peach of lady but does struggle with her eye sight but that could just be a coincidence.

my hair is the best its been for years im hoping the minoxidil max will thicken it even more.30 years down the line its looking brill, both my mum and dad lost their hair my mum was nearly bald before dementia took her .
Please try the protein powder its to obvious not to if your hair is made of protein. My libido is low but im 55 now and as the saying goes im here for a good time not a long time and whats the point if your unhappy to me its been worth the side effects,Regards David

Hi just incase you have a relapse and with regard to your mental health as hairloss can consume you have you tried an antidepressant it sounds like you may need to take the edge of your thoughts if you are more relaxed and not stressed things dont seem such a big deal ive been on 100mg of flouxitine for a while and in the past been on Gabepetin 100mg as that has also been linked with nerve pain both of these were recommended by a private specialist when my pain was at its worse and it felt like someone was clutching your head tightly 24hrs a day.Their are reported suicides due to this condition.Regards David

This is my last post of the day if you are not happy using the minoxidil and the finasteride i have tried certrizine crushed up in distilled water and applied topically this will calm the scalp and encourage hair growth. This is an antihistamine so works against the DHT production. These are basically a hay fever tablet and are a couple of quid a pack so makes it a cheap easy hack.Take them orally also but follow the rules on the box.obvs David

This was a recommendation from a top tryc at a private clinic in notts who contacted my Dr and suggested it .All im saying is it helped me out with pain that at times was unbearable when stressed. My scalp condition developed because i was affraid to see the hairloss when washing it.The hairloss was prolific before the tablets. As with everything look into it thoroughly and take medical advice.

My older brother has jet black hair and isn't balding, just some minor temple recession aka mature hair line, I've started to bald immediately once I hit puberty, I remember this afternoon when I entered the school bus and an insane itch hit me out of the blue in my scalp, it hasn't left me since. I only noticed the baldness in my mid 20's.

I just can't eat certain foods like butter, cheese, sugar, anything oily like bacon, fries, cookies, chocolates ... my older brother eats all of that no issues, my endocrine system is messed up and there's cure or solution to this.

Since you're from the UK you probably seen this TV chef called Rick Stein who is bald, even as I kid I noticed him always scratching his head, it's part of the hair loss condition. If I ate those foods I mentioned I wouldn't be able to sleep, the burning and itch sensation would keep me up all night, before when I was younger I would just get back acne, now all the inflammation goes straight to the scalp.

So try different diets and see if you experience less scalp issues.

If you have a burning or itchy scalp, then most likely you'll also experience hair loss. The intense scratching damages your hair follicles. So, in order to stop hair loss due to an itchy scalp, you must identify the cause of your itchy/burning scalp, like in your case it was Seborrheic dermatitis. Apart from this, sometimes hair product choices are also a reason for an itchy scalp. Use hair products that address the symptoms and treat the underlying conditions of your itchy or burning scalp.

Anyone out there, if you're experiencing hair loss, first treat the root cause of your hair loss then hair loss will automatically stop. For seborrheic dermatitis, you can use a dermatitis shampoo that contains a perfect blend of ingredients that soothe and heal your scalp.

Don't rule out an infestation of the invisible microscopic Demodex Mites which are commonly in all our hair follicles after the age of 18.
Yet we can have a spike in their numbers.

Also don't rule out that our stress might trigger the mites.
Don't sooth the pain with things which don't kill the mites. Because that only hides the fact that the mites are biting away on our scalp and in our hair follicles! Scientists have not completed ruled them out as a cause for our hair loss and are just now finding their previous methods of detecting the mites was poor. They are also finding the mites are connected to many face skin conditions which resolve when the mites are killed/reduced.

Diluted Tea tree essential oil is Very good for our hair AND is one of the very few things that can actually kill the surface mites and bring more to the surface.
Just dilute the Tea tree oil down to 10% to 50% by adding any skin friendly carrier oil such as Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Mineral Oil, etc.
Apply at bedtime because the Mites come out in the dark in our sleep to mate.
Keep it out of your eyes because it will sting for a while if you don't.
Try to apply consistently for 2 months and see what results you have with the reduced mites population as well any dandruff often disappears.

Take care
