Hello I am new to this board but have been an observer for quite sometime now. I need advice concerning a regimen to help combat my hairloss. Any advice or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! First a little background on my situation...

I am currently 24 years old. All my life, through my childhood and adolesent years I had really thick hair. I had sort of a high hairline, but neverthless my long thick hair covered it up and I never had any comments, just comments about how awesome my hair was. About the end of 2005 and first quarter of 2006 I started to purchase Toppik to fill in the very little sport that I had on my hairline to make it more symetric. Of course I became obsessed with how straight the toppik made my hairline and I went way overboard with it. It got to the point where I would take a shower and refuse to wash my hair due to how great my hair looked and how much of pain it would be to use the Toppik again to straighten it out. Well after a while, say May 2006, I noticed how artifical the hairline looked. My aunt, who is a hair stylist told me it was so obvious that I was using something to create a hairline. Now I had never gotten that comment before. One day I washed my hair and actually looked at my hair WITHOUT the Toppik and WOW was I in shock. After 7 months of using the Toppik and sparingly washing my hair my whole front region was depleted. Literally very thin and my tempal region was practically gone! I DO have male pattern baldness on my father's side of the family and not my mothers. So this could be something speeding up my male pattern baldness.

I eventually went on as regimen prescribed by a company. It was very costly and I was sold because I was panicked and would've been sold on anything. I utilized the regimen, which consisted of shampoos and minoxidil, religiously. I was making AMAZING results. At first I had major fallout, even in the vertex region, which leads me to believe that the Toppik and the male pattern baldness caused this. After 4 months of using this regimen small hairs began to grow in the tempal region and along the hairline. Colorless hairs that were VERY encouraging.....FAST FORWARD TO NOW October 2007....What a difference from May 2006...my whole frontal region is filled in and there are numerous terminal hairs growing in the tempal region and along the hairline. I went to a dermatologist which said that thnese were in fact healthy hairs growing in. The hairs have been steady and thickening. Now it is time to renew this treatment, but with the advice of my doctor I realize that I do not need this regimen. The regimen is based on 5% minoxidil, which I can purchase in the store, and not even finasteride but saw palmetto pills which are commonly considered, EVEN AMONGST doctors as a placebo. There is no valid basis to say that saw palmetto inhibits DHT, a view also commoinly shared on this board as well. My doctor prescribed me Propecia and I have purchased Nizoral and Rogaine 5% foam.

I'd like to know what types of cheaper finasteride there are and what percentage I should take. Also what types of % Nizoral and how often should I use it. Also any other supplments that have worked well for others....I am a second year Law Student at Columbia and I am financing it myself so getting off this EXPENSIVE regimen (2000 dollar range!!!) and onmto something that will work better (NO SAW PALMETTO)..

also I will put up pics once I receive my digital camera...i know how much better it is to see actual pics

Please respond here or feel free to email me at Bp2232@hotmail.com

Thank You So Much and any advice will be SOOOO GREATLY APPRECIATED

Hi mate

Great read. I have just recently switched from Regaine 5% min solution to the rogain foam, I am nearing the end of my first month on the foam. I have also just started taking finasteride, I am at the end of month 2 with that. I have proscar 5mg which I cut into 4 and take 1.25mg a day. I haven't really seen anything yet but its early days. I added nizoral 2% at the same time I switched to rogaine. I'm hoping to see some results at the end of next month.

Proscar is good quality finasteride which needs to be devided up into 4 or 5 (1.25mg or 1 mg) and taken daily. I've read that some generic finasteride is not as affective, I have no idea how correct that information is. Proscar is definately a cheaper way of taking finasteride.

Your welcome.

I cut mine into 4ths as its easier. Don't be too worried if you don't get the cuts perfect. Sometimes my 1/4s vary in size. Apparently aslong as you don't go smaller than 0.2mg, which you won't, you'll be fine. The tablet is a strange shape anyway. I find using a sharpe non serrated knife to chop (not saw) works best.

Good luck to you as well. :punk:
