Baseline photos (recommended treatment?)

I took some photos here. I'm pretty sure I have a mild case of Telogen Effluvium from surgery complications 2.5 months ago, but there seems to be thinning in the crown and temples.

http://ca.f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/ ... =/Baseline

Questions:

1) Am I definitely thinning in the crown and temples? It seems that the first shot of my crown is a little more barren than the typical 'swirl' pattern.

2) Recommended treatment to try to grow back temple hair? I just started propecia last week, and was thinking of starting Xandrox as well.

3) It seems finasteride does a pretty good job of maintaining (and growing) hair at the top in most people, but not for growing at the hairline. Is it any good (generally) for maintaining what you have left at the front/temporal regions?

All suggestions/feedback appreciated.

You have the identical pattern of hair loss that I have which started when I was 19. I got on minoxidil 5% right away and grew a lot back. I then went on propecia 1mg a year later and grew even more. I'm twenty five now and have only recently begun to notice a little more thinning along my hairline and frontal area, and a bit more recession in my temps.
Stay on propecia. Add minoxidil if you like. Both worked very well for me at maintaining/regrowing. This was true for all my hair including my frontal area, hairline, and temps.
Remember to keep it simple. Start with propecia and minoxidil 5%. That will likely be all that you need. If you experience chronic scalp irritation, then you can try xandrox 5% without propylene glycol.
A good shampoo is important, too. Nioxin is a good one. Nizoral is one of the "big 3" in this forum, but its not for everyone as it can cause scalp dryness and irritation in some. If you do not have a preexisting scalp problem besides the hair thinning, I'd recommend starting with a shampoo like nioxin(scalp therapy is awesome) or american crew revitalize. Please note that these shampoos will not regrow hair, no matter what the salesperson tries to tell you. And don't buy anything more than the bionutrient cleanser and scalp therapy. There are other products in the nioxin line that are completely unnecessary.
T-gel should be something to consider as well to alternate into you shampoo regimine, as it was used in the propecia studies. Scalp inflammation is something that seems to be present in everyone in any stage of male pattern baldness, even in almost unnoticeable amounts, and T-gel can control it in most people. The T-gel shampoo and conditioner work very well for me, but may not for you. You need to find what works best for you.

Dude you dont have a problem, you cant even be considered yet. Comeback in a few years when you have bald spots on your head like all of us here. Judging from your photos I think you are paranoid, in any case you shouldnt worry till you have visible thin spots.

Get started with spironolactone and/or minoxidil on the hairline. Take .5 or 1mg of Finasteride a day. Shampoo with Nizoral 3 times a week.

Your hair will be great.

No redbone he needs to do something about it now. He is in the very early stages. He got lucky he caught it this early cause he can get all of his hair back. It seems he lost a tad bit but nothing really even noticeable.

If he waits he will just be hurting himself. male pattern baldness is male pattern baldness. It wont go away no matter how your hair looks.

He is in great shape now, but if he waits a couple years he might not.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to start with Propecia, Xandrox (5% without BV) and Nizoral (2%) every 3 days. See how it goes for 6 months and then reassess. Might throw in TGel as well for good measure.

Only use TGEL if you suffer from scalp itch or irritation. Also I would reccomend you use only Xandrox on the hairline and maybe .25ml on the crown. You dont need to apply it everywhere.

Why start with the costly Xandrox? See what plain'ol minoxidil 5% will do for you first! One daily application may even do the trick. You're already addressing DHT with propecia.

In all actuality, I wouldn't even suggest minoxidil on the hairline yet. I would only use spironolactone. He doesn't even really need to regrow much. spironolactone 2x a day + Fina will most likely stop things right where they are. minoxidil should be used for regrowth.

I would have to agree with bomb...minoxidil is a pain in the *** =P

True, for a lot of folk it is, but once daily use is pretty easy. And, IMO, spironolactone is much more 'iffy'.

And so far as minoxidil being just for regrowth, that's the best kind of maintenance there is, no?

No dont start with all three right away you are using all the weapons known to man in your arsenal right up front. I believe you should start small and work up like HairLossTalk.com is doing, I take it you are fairly young- a reigme can possibly extend your hairloss by 5-10 years if your lucky,
hopefully in that time they will invent a cure rather than a treatment.

Start with one product then add as necessary, I would not try propecia til it was necessary and at your stage it is not- think about it how long can you stay on propecia 5yrs maybe. Wait till you really need the stuff, because you could be burning out all your options up front. If I were you I would try Dr. Proctors stuff, nano shampoo and the perscription Prophexin. It is supposed to maintain hair very well, with slight re-growth.

redbone:

I just turned 27. I'm going to stick with propecia because I like the idea of something protecting future thinning (as opposed to topicals which you just apply to current thinning). Hopefully it and the Xandrox (supposed to inhibit DHT as well) will keep me looking good for 3-5 years and then I can save spironolactone, Xandrox15, nano/prophexin to kick it up a notch if need be.

Here's hoping that in 5 years, there will be other treatments as well, along with some sort of cloning technique.

I would keep the Xandrox in your pocket and just do Propecia for starters. Starting Xandrox at your age is going to be a costly over your lifetime and frankly I don't think your hair needs Xandrox-like changes.

Try the Propecia alone, it's probably the best for you given (I'm assuming) a more youthful lifestyle and I think it is better targeted for someone in your situation. Xandrox is for baldies, to restart hair that is not there. For you, it's like taking penicillin to prevent a cut from becoming infected.. and it is expensive and requires some daily discipline to fit it in to your routine. If you insist on taking a topical, why not straight minoxidil? You are already getting DHT suppression?

Just my opinion. Good luck.
