Balding at a young age... what to do ?!

Hello everyone,

I'm 16 years old, and I'm starting to get concerned about hair loss. I feel that I've been losing hair for about 4 months now, but just recently its got worse. I wake up in the morning, and find about 10 new hairs per day on my pillow, and in the shower I seem to lose a lot of hair as well. This has been going on for awile, but now I can see my front hair line slowly moving back.

I once read in a book that going bald at a young age can be very preventable if you do something about it quick, so I decided to go to the doctor the other day. The doctor looked at my scalp, and told me that I just have some dandriff and a waxy buildup on my scalp. He told me to pick up some Nizoral, but so far that hasn't been doing much for me. Nizoral got rid of my dandriff, but that waxy buildup is still there. I also tried Head and Shoulders Intensive Care shampoo, but that only gets rid of the dandriff... not the buildup.

I consider myself a pretty healthy person, and I shower/shampoo everyday. I'm starting to think that the waxy buildup is the cause of my hairloss, since just about every hair that comes out is loaded with it around the root area.

I came here to ask for help from you guys before I go out and blow money away on things like Rogaine.

Do you guys get a waxy buildup on your scalp ?
What do you use to get rid of it ?
What kind of products can you recommend to me to help me out ?

Thanks for all your help :)

I find that the majority of people that lose their hair initially have poor scalp condition and must use nizoral/or another anti-dandruff agent in order to prevent it. You are young and I know your hopeful that it's just a waxy buildup thats causing your hairloss but to be honest i would have to say it sounds more like male pattern baldness. I say that because you specifically mention your hairline beginning to receed, and hair on your pillow/shower. My doctor was as well hesitant to declare that i had male pattern baldness because i was so young (17) but it turns out I did and if i had acted sooner would have had a much better chance to further prevent it.

If i was you i'd maybe take a few weeks to try and cleanse your scalp.. Use nizoral, head and shoulders, T-Gel or whatever else works for you and do whatever it takes to get it healthy. If the shedding still persists once you have your healthy scalp then take full action. Personally I would say try out propecia first just because so many people have been able to find success maintiang with it (83%) and its better to go through the cycle of drugs slowly instead of going on all at once. Its a risk for someone your age though, so before you make your decision make sure to read about all the potential side-effects and learn more about the drug. Good Luck.

A couple things here. Sorry to say, going bald at a young age does not make it very preventible at all if it is the dreaded male pattern baldness. Yeah I said it, Male pattern baldness baby, it f*cking rules. I assume it is male pattern baldness because you referr to a receding hairline. Hopefully it progresses slowly for you. Is your dad bald, uncles, cousins(same age and that look like you), grandfathers etc.

Waxy buildup? Have no idea what this could be besides very oily skin, and it's residie you're talking about.

Try a good sclap massage and loosen to loosen everything up and get the blood flowing a bit. Put on the NIZORAL and let it sit for AT LEAST 10 minutes(do it before going in shower even while you take a sh*t or something) Then rinse hair with only cold water(just gritt teeth). Cold water is very soothing and POSSIBLY reduces immflamtion. Try with also T-Gel.

Or give rogaine a try if things get worse.
