Are these small black hair nearly dead?

I'm diffusing in this part of my hairline. If you closely at this picture http://imgur.com/vHSm9zK there are small thick black hairs that look like they're going to grow but they don't.. They seem to be growing extremely slow but the thickness is the same. They're not grow at the same rate. Why do I have all black spots where you can see where the hair is but it just won't grow! For example http://imgur.com/sn2NOyY. I can see quite a few of the hairs in the section are miniaturised and I'm so tempted to tweezer them out lol. I'm going to shave it again tomorrow to grade one.

Why won't these hairs grow though? Isn't miniaturisation when the hairs become thinner to the point they become see through and just stop growing? You can see those in the pic..

Alright, so miniaturization of actual hair happens due to the size of the miniaturizing of the papilla, the organ that actually grows the hair. The smaller the papilla, the smaller the hairs that grow. Once the papilla is so small, theres nearly nothing that grows at all. However, the papilla never actually dies, it just becomes tiny. This is due to the number of CD200 and CD34+ cells in the papilla, the number of the cells decreases overtime. Of course, other factors also play a part; upregulation of DHT, DKK1, PGD2 etc. and downregulation of PGE2 etc.

Essentially, what youre seeing is hairs becoming smaller. In time, your hairline will creep back as the follicles in the front will slowly become too small to grow hair. You're only methods of treating all this now is to take Finasteride to block DHT and take Minoxidil to promote PGE2. At best you'll regrow some hair (or a lot if youre really lucky) but typically just stop further miniaturization.

One final note: Thanks for posting nice macro photos, unlike all the other dumbasses that show out of focus and blurry photos from an angle that shows no level of hair loss.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I'm. Not sure the route I am going to take. I am gradually coming round to the idea of finasteride.
