Are there any risks in taking protein supplements?

I recently started working out. My problem is that i dont eat that much. Some people told me that if i work out and dont gain enough protein, i am going to burn my muscle mass instead of building it up. So i am thinking of taking protein supplements but i am worried if there are any risks with that? Or is it simple like vitamin supplements?

Also what food is known to be rich in proteins?

If you drink too much protein without carbohydrates you can get dehydrated. Also, if you don't workout you can put on a lot of weight.

I wouldn't worry about it. You have to drink a lot of protein. Your supposed to drink more water anyway.

I'm starting a diet today and two of my meals will be a protein shake with a cup of fruit blended in.

I'm in the same situation you're in, just make sure the protein supplement you have is just protein and doesn't have extra stuff thrown in. I say this because some supplements have substances similar to steroids in them, DON'T take those. 100% whey protein is usually a safe bet.

Would this weight be stuffed up in my belly, my hips or my chest? Cause i wouldnt mind if i put on 6-7kgs, but only if they were equally distributed through my body.

I honestly don't know.

If you want to put on 6-7kgs, eat more chicken and drink a weight gainer protein.

Don't do what he said. Weight gainers are pure sh*t. They are super expensive and contain loads of sugar etc. Your blood sugar will go crazy once you start drinking weight gainers. Plus, you can have an actual meal for what 1 serving of a weight gainer costs.

If you want to gain weight, increase your daily calorie intake. Eat for the weight you want to be. 21 calories per pound of goal weight. Ex. You want to weigh 200lbs. 200lbs * 21 calories = 4200 calories per day. Divide 4200 calories into 6 meals. 4200/6 = 700 calories per meal.

Since it's nearly impossible to eat 6 actual meals per day, choose 2 or 3 meals and replace with a protein shake (not a weight gainer though!). Most protein shakes don't have 700 calories when mixed with water, so mix with whole milk. Also, eat oats with your protein shakes. I eat mine raw chased down with the protein shake.

I gained 12lbs in 5 weeks eating like this...Combined with going to the gym and lifting hard every week.

I weight 155 pounds and maintain it just fine with 2300 calories per day. I doubt anyone will need 4000 calories to maintain 200 pounds. The extra calories are just needed to put on the weight. Obviously the more you eat, the higher the percentage of that weight that will be fat.

I said if you wanted to weigh 200lbs, as in gain weight.

To maintain, you don't need to eat that much, of course. But base calorie maintainence is different for everyone. Someone with a very fast metabolism may have to eat 3,000 calories per day to maintain 155lbs, while someone with a slow metabolism needs to eat only 2,000.

Meh....I did great drinking weight gainers for 6 months. So have others I know.

I never said you couldn't gain weight using weight gainer shakes. I said they are expensive and you can find cheaper things to help you gain weight. Weight gainers are viewed as crap by most body builders and muscle mags.

Many of these supplement shakes contain about 40% dextrose can anybody tell me exactly what this is? I'm guessing its just a cheap filler and probably not very benificial.

The refined sugar that is the 'carbs' part of the weight gainer.

Good for post-workout where you need about 50/50 protein and carbs to spike your insulin level.

Note, it'll be cheaper to by a protein poweder and by glucose powder and add the glucose powder to protein shakes taken AFTER a workout and leave it out otherwise.

This will give you lean muscle rather than putting on muscle and fat.

Dextrose = D-Glucose
