Applying Finasteride Topically -- Any Use?

I've read posts on forums here and there where some will crush up Proscar tablets in their minoxidil and then apply it. I've got a little recession in my temple areas, maybe a couple milimeters over the past few years, and 5% Xandrox with Retin A from minoxidil.com has only given me peachfuzz. I use this maybe 1-2x per day, with their Ketonazole-based shampoo maybe every 2-3 days.

I'm thinking about getting some liquid finasteride and mixing it with the 5% Xandrox + RA, just to see what happens. I figure that my hair situation doesn't require systemic anti-DHT treatment yet, nor do I want to mess with DHT since it's important for secondary male sex characteristics. And by looking at the other males in my family it doesn't look like my hair will get much worse, if at all. I just turned 26, and I've got the hairline my brother has at 34.

If an effective topcial finasteride treatment was possible, Merck would have certainely taken that option, as opposed to the oral treatment Propecia. There is precisely ZERO evidence suggesting topical finasteride is effective in male pattern baldness. Have you considered topical spironolactone?

But isn't Merck applying for a patent for topical finasteride?

My tin foil hat feeling is that perhaps Merck felt they could make more money off a pill than a topical. I mean, look at how cheap minoxidil is now OTC.

They applied for a patent purely to prevent other companies developing a topical finasteride treatment and stealing their Propecia customers.

as i remember Bryan and some others went into this topic in some detail a while back. you could probably find the post with the search function. the long and the short of it was that there would probably be systemic absorption anyway so no difference to taking it orally. as i remember though the various studies done on the subject all had conflicting results.

oh an by the way they did a pill rather than a cream because it was more marketable and would seem more convenient to the user.
