that minoxidil etc is NOT needed to help a H\T grow,it helps it grow a little faster but if you did not use anything at all it will be fine. defeats the purpose of H\T if you still need to use things, isn't that the whole point

the use of minoxidil after a hair transplant is not needed.

It is controversial how much it speeds stuff up, and if you have to gradually get off it to not adversly affect the grafts.

My first procedure was 13 FU/cm2, no minoxidil, and 1/3 of my hairs did not fall out. They just started growing right away from day one. The less density you have put in, the less likely they will go into shock and fall out. But even if they do, they will be back in 3-7 months. It is just telogen, nothing serious.

Hey CCS do you feel doing smaller procedures at a lower density is better in terms of graft yield and recipient shock loss than a bigger procedure at a higher density?

I think 30 is pretty safe. yeah, lower densities might be a bit safer. I honestly don't know how well 70+ grafts can be done at once with FUE, or how risky the extraction from the back is. Some docs may pull it off, but I feel safer with a strip procedure.

Minoxidil is not needed to regrow transplanted hair. But the active ingredient can stimulate hair follicules to remain in anagen (growth phase) longer and can also encourage earlier movement of telogen (resting phase) follicles into anagen. You can also consider using MSM in the short term to increase the rate of growth.

Gillenator,
I have love/hate relationship with MSM.
When I am on MSM, the male pattern baldness/transplanted hairs grow quicker. However, the hair on the sides grow much faster and I need a hair cut every week to look decent.
Also my body hair (facial, etc) grow very fast if I am on MSM and it becomes a pain to shave/remove frequently.

Even the nails grow fast and I end up trimming my nails every 2 or 3 days.
So I have decided to say no for MSM and only using biotin and L-arginine.

(MSM also upsets my stomach).

and what does the biotin do? Is there a cure for thinning eyebrows?

Jayman,
I was taking 1000 mg of MSM per day. I bought this from bodybuilding.com (I buy my whey protein from there).

Collegechemistry, I am taking Bryan's words for Biotin. In an earlier post he had suggested that only Biotin and vitamin B6 have studies that show that male pattern baldness hairs are positively affected by these two internal vitamin/mineral.

Too much of vitamin B6 can be a problem. However Biotin at 500 mg (or 5 mg?) per day is helpful for male pattern baldness.

tech,

My temporary dilemma is that the exisiting hair in my recipient area needed to be cut down to accomodate the new recipient incisions and avoid transection.

I am either going to have to get my sides and back cut down to say a number three, or continue minoxidil and then get on MSM to speed up the growth. Maybe I can do both because my hairstylist is only fifteen minutes away so I don't mind the more frequent cuts until everything grows in more evenly.

Living under a ball cap for now so hopefully both the minoxidil and MSM will get the growth going faster. I do not like short hair or wearing caps!

transection is a reason why the Doctor better put grafts in the same direction as the existing hair.

Lookin,

How long do you intend to take MSM? I just started it this weekend and taking 2,000 mg per day. Am also applying minoxidil twice per day and living under a cap until the growth kicks in.

Well it's very effective for soft tissue flexibility and extensibility. I should stay on it idefinitely. Why do you ask?

My nails just keep growing like mad. I hope I can preserve the cartilage in my knees for ever!
