This is something I've always wondered about but I've never seen any real evidence supporting or refuting this popular opinion. Have there been any studies on this?
I've done a little research on this, Apparently the mothers sides has more of a weighting on the baldness. The most important Gene is the androgen receptor which is on the x chromosome. Testing can be done for the amount of CAG repeats on the AR to predict baldness.
Notice how different people have different balding patterns. Temple, hairline, crown, diffuse at different rates, plus diffuse thinning in the leftover area, plus the difference between NW5, NW6, and Nw7, plus the speed at which you think. Clearly, there are multiple genes involved.
