Any benefit to using retin-a once a week

Hey guys, would there be any type of benefit from using retin-a just once a week?

I have used it in the past but went overboard and saw lots of irritation/loss because my skin was in such bad shape. I am also in the sun a lot so once a week is all that I can do.
