Not sure about prozac, but once I was prescribed a benzodiazepine to control anxiety and I did lose some hair. Ask your doctor or do web search on side effects.

most anti-depressants have hairloss as a potential side effect

you could find another forum when people use anti-depressants and start a thread asking about their experiences with hairloss

lol. no you did not. you lost hair because you were losing hair. Benzos have no effect on hair whatsoever. you probably over obsessed about the possiblity and analyzed every single strand falling out of your head, stressed about it, thus achieving a self fulfilling prophecy.

some anti depressants run that risk. but its such a minute chance, you have to ask yourself what will cause more harm...your current emotional state which IS DEFINATELY a culprite in hair loss, or the medication which may cause hair loss, but 98% likely will not cause any hair loss while at the same alleviating your mental problems which may promote healthy growth.

but u have to weigh your own mental state and judge whether u truly need them. and if u do, i think u should take them

My knowledge of the pharmacology of neurology is limited. Pretty much any given antidepressant can potentially have hair loss as a side effect.

However, I can speak from personal experience that the hair loss is rather limited and is somewhat diffuse. I took a tricyclic antidepressant for my migraine headaches for a few years and I really didn't notice a whole lot of hair loss. In fact, my male pattern baldness actually started well after I discontinued the use of those drugs.

Believe it or not, I can pretty easily control my migraines with biofeedback now. Those drugs really do work miracles if you stick with them long enough.

i think hairloss for some may result from a decreased appetite while on the medication

Possible. However, I've seen the weight thing go either way. Some loose weight and others gain it. Personally, I didn't do either and maintained the entire time I was on the drug.

Everybody seems to react differently to antidepressants. They have to be the most frustrating drugs for neurologists and psychiatrists to use.

wellbutrin can cause hairloss in a small percentage, i am pretty sure thats the only one... at least i am aware of

scientists, you have to really not eat a lot and be in starvation to lose hair from not eating, anti-depressants don't cause that type of change in eating

docj077: what were you on?

i guess if you're depressed you could eat more too

i was thinking more of medications for ADD that are stimulants

i would google search the medication you are considering +
"hairloss" and see what experiences others have had

i took wellbutrin for a day or 2 when i was really depressed about my hair, then i found out online that hairloss was a possible side effect

kinda ironic

no, nothing to do with seratonin, though not all drugs are SSRIs
