on mothers side theres my Grandad who isnt fully bald but has quite a lot of hairloss and there isnt much left on the top (dont know his age tbh, 60s?). Uncle passed away and never really met him ( was in the past few years, so if its neccesary could try and find out what his hair was like)
Basically, give it to me straight, am I losing hair and should I do anything or am I paranoid?

It's hard to tell as there's nothing to compare it to. But my initial impression was that no, you don't have any hair loss. I'd wait like 6 months and post some updated pictures then to see if anything has changed. Until then I wouldn't worry about it.

firstly you have very nice hair and its thick. If you are receding it is far from the end of the world, it is likely to be a 'mature hairline'. You need to realise most white men get a 'mature hairline'. While it is technically balding it is extremely common and there is every chance you will not be noticeably balding until much later in life, or perhaps at all. However the reality is, people with mature hairlines do actually have the balding gene and more often than not any such recession doesn't truly just stop, it keeps going usually at slow pace for men with 'mature hairlines'.

I was about 19 when I first started noticing imperfections in my hairline. It wasn't until I was 26 until I began medication. I wasn't really in total denial, I just couldn't tell for sure because the recession was extremely slow however in hindsight I should have just realised that there were no imperfections at the transition between skin and hair anywhere else on my scalp other than the hairline. It was happening right where you would expect for men to lose hair and that was at the hairline yet I allowed this 'mature hairline' myth persuade myself that it was a normal occurrence even though it is technically balding.

With this knowledge I am sorry to say, yes I do think you have begun receding. It isn't bad at all and as I said, common for men around your age to experience it. You still are a norwood 1, basically a perfect hairline. Its a tough position to be in I admit, you are far from truly balding like some men experience, therefore it is hard to get a certified diagnosis. Many derms and doctors will tell you that everything is just fine because they believe in the mature hairline delusion. If you don't want to spend 7 years fretting about a potentially receding hairline like I did, save up some money and consult a Hair transplant specialist and have your scalp and in particular your hairline mapped for miniaturisation. That is the ONLY way you will get a proper picture of what is going on. I say you should do this because I could very well be wrong, it wouldn't surprise me if he were to find no discernible miniaturisation and you really don't just want to get on finasteride for no reason. Because that is the other important point, the only way you can fight this, is to get on an anti androgen. All these other medications, whilst they might help, none of them fight the root cause of the problem and as a result they fail in the long term.

cliffs:
-you have a good hairline as it is right now and therefore plenty of time
-you need to see a hair transplant specialist asap who can map you for miniaturisation to get a proper diagnosis
-if diagnosed, get on finasteride. If everything is fine, do nothing.
-most of all don't stress, given your family history it is unlikely you will ever be truly bald.

How much are consultations like that?
