Individuals who develop low testosterone as a side effect of finasteride usage may notice their metabolism slows. Testosterone increases metabolic rate in males.

That said, it is still calories in vs. calories out. If you exercise and watch what you eat, finasteride and MOST drugs will have very little impact on your weight.

You're forgetting the fact that Finasteride can shift the androgen/estrogen ratio to be more in favor of estrogen in a man's body... hence warnings of gynecomastia, breast tenderness and breast pain from the manufacturer.

In addition, with an increase in Estradiol can come an increase in bodyfat and thus, weight gain.

Still primarily calories in v calories out (which is hormonally mediated by the thyroid). You can't create matter. If you notice you begin to gain weight on finasteride and you don't want to quit, exercise and diet modification WILL STILL WORK, but it may require you to be more aggressive about it.

That said with an adultered T/E ratio, what you can occur is the breakdown of protein and "convert" it to fat (not direct conversion, but if the compounds are not used up they will be re-stored as triglycerides in adipocytes). Testosterone creates a tendency for the body to anabolize amino acids into muscle whereas an unfavorable T/E ratio MIGHT favor its conversion to fat and storage in areas such as the breasts and hips.

IN addition, studies have shown that testosterone increases metabolism by as much as 20%. If you have low T (not a COMMON side effect), it is not far-fetched to think that you might notice your weight go up while eating the same diet. It also goes the other way around, however. If you increase lean muscle mass by working out at the gym, you can also increase testosterone output... i suspect this is why there is an unproven correlation with weight lifting and hair loss.

The increases of estradiol (and testosterone) are transient according to leading physicians in the field with finasteride therapy. As you know, testosterone is still created in 10-20X greater quantities in males than females. So yes, feminization can occur, but you aren't going to lose your penis and develop large voluptuous breasts once you pop your first finasteride pill unless you are so predisposed. And the good news is that the vast majority see complete recovery from side effects suffered.

Make no mistake about it, elective finasteride therapy is a rather big decision. However, it has a good safety profile. Much more safe in terms of incidence of side effects than many OTC meds out there.

Show me some case studies where you have controls (before therapy) that shifted to feminine profile on finasteride alone. This would mean that genetic (xy) males would have to decrease testosterone output by one order of magnitude. I'll believe it when I see it (and quite frankly be a little hopeful that they succesfully sued Merck).

The testicles produce >95% of serum testosterone. This leaves <5% that is secreted into circulation by the adrenal glands. sh*t that's 20X more in healthy males v healthy females!
