I have been in a huge ball of confusion. Since 2004 I have been taking propecia and using nizoral 1%. It has let me keep a lot of hair. About a month ago I had to quit propecia for certain circumstances and won't be able to get back on it any time soon. Right now all i'm using is nizoral and MSM. I think I will be getting on minoxidil and i want something else to add to my regimen to help maintain. What should i do???????? please help me guys.

Add a topical androgen inhibitor like spironolactone. I'd do all you can do get back on propecia or avodart though because it has been proven to inhibit dht. I think that getting on the oral dht inhibitor like propecia or avodart is the single best step you can take to keep your hair.

You could consider adding copper peptides as well through something like Tricomin or Folligen.

If you don't get on some kind of DHT blocker (namely Propecia or Avodart) like JayMan suggested, you could really lose a lot of hair because all of the hair that was saved by the Propecia will be lost very soon.

If we knew your situation as to why you can no longer take Propecia, many on here would be better able to advise you. No one here knows who you are in real life.

Thinner,

you might also try to lower your dosage of Propecia. As already said, we don´t know your problem, but if you actually have maintained lots of hair I would think twice about quitting it. In the end it is up to you.

Thinner,

Rogaine is just like toppik. It gives you an extra 100 or so hairs per circular inch while you are on it, but you continue to bald at the same rate. And when you get off it, you loose the 100 hairs really fast, putting you where you would have been had you never been on it the whole time.

SODs actually repair damage, I think, and the hair regrown by them should stay around a while even after you get off, them, though it is best to use a little once you regrow what you can, just to maintain it.

Revivogen blocks 5ar just like propecia, but weaker. Its fatty acid ingredients are as effective on hampster flank organ size as spironolactone is, so I'm guessing it would help your hair as much as spironolactone. However, spironolactone works in a different way, by blocking the receptors where DHT binds, though not that well. If you use them both, you will get a better effect. With the SODs, you might be able to do as well as propecia alone, but I don't know.

Many scams have borage seed oil or minoxidil or saw palmetto. Borage seed oil is good only if its fatty acids are freed from their glycerol, as in Revivogen.

The nizoral is better than nothing, but will not make or break your regimen. People just use it because it attacks from another angle, inflamation I think.

College...did you mean something else when you said Rogaine is like Toppik? Tricomin maybe? Toppik is a concealer for thinning hair....kind of a powdery substance you sprinkly amongst your existing hair.

i did not mean it is a concealer. I just meant that rogaine give you hair only when you use it. Get off it, and you lose all your gains in weaks. You get a big shed from propecia too if you get off it, but the shed takes a year, and if you get back on propecia, the shed stops. If you get back on rogaine, it continues to the bottom and then takes a year to get back up.

I agree it is not a good analogy. rogaine just requires a lot more dedication than propecia.

I understand.....just skimming through your post I thought you were stating that Rogaine was like Toppik as far as regrowth properties. Reading again I see you meant that both work only while you use them.

Beaner,

Do you think that is a fair statement for me to make about rogaine, since propecia only works while you use it, too? I think post propecia hair loss is much slower than post rogaine hair loss, and more quickly reversible upon continuing the drug, which is why I made the statement.
