a few rogaine questions

I have been on Propecia for 7 months, and faithfully take it every day. I'm 24. A doctor recommended that I add Rogaine as well, since I am concerned that Propecia alone will not work, as I have a pretty significant family history of male pattern baldness (basically everybody besides my dad).

I used Rogaine liquid for a week in December and stopped because I didn't think I wanted to keep doing it forever. 3 weeks ago I started Rogaine foam and stopped after 2 weeks for the same reason.

I asked the same doctor about my issues (this time through his blog) and he said that I should consider using the liquid right before I go to bed and using a lot, therefore I won't have to have "Rogaine head" but can still benefit. So my questions:

1. I am only going to do this if I think the Propecia is not fully maintaining. In January I thought that it was pretty decent on its own, but I got greedy and went for the Rogaine too. Then my hair thinned a lot in the 2 weeks on the Rogaine. I think that this is shedding. Is it realistic for me to have *visible* shedding in that timescale?

2. How bad would it be to apply Rogaine liquid only 15 minutes before I go to bed, 4 nights a week, but use a lot? Would that be ineffective? I crash at others' places a lot.

3. Realistically, how long before something better could come along that would let me leave Rogaine? Any supplement to Propecia in the pipeline that I could at least hope for?

If I thought I could stop at any time and keep my results, of course I would start right away. But I am paralyzed by the thought of committing myself to something for 10 years which is visibly ugly on a daily basis. Even if I do it right before I go to bed, my girlfriend and roommates will still see it, etc.
